Gay Vista was the inaugural Lighting Stakes winner back in 1955.
Sky High (1961, 1962) and Wenona Girl (1963, 1964) both enjoyed back-to-back wins as the first multiple Lighting Stakes winners.
Other two-time Lightning Stakes winners include Maybe Mahal in 1977-78, River Rough in 1984-85, Schillaci in 1992-93, and Mahogany in 1995-1997.
The event’s most notable winner is three-time champion and the race’s now namesake Black Caviar (2011-13).
Todman (1960) won the Lightning Stakes three years after winning the inaugural Golden Slipper race in 1957.
The late ‘Cups King’ Bart Cummings holds the training record having prepared eight Lightning Stakes winners with Storm Queen in 1967, Century in 1974, Cap D’antibes in 1975, Maybe Mahal in 1977-78, Demus in 1983, Hula Chief in 1986, and Shaftsbury Avenue in 1991.
The 2021 Black Caviar Lightning winner Nature Strip went on to famously win that spring’s edition of the world’s richest turf race, the now $20 million The Everest in Sydney.
Both Nature Strip (2021) and Chautauqua (2016) are former Black Caviar Lightning winners that also co-hold the record of having won Sydney’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on three occasions.
The 2022 Black Caviar Lightning winner was the Chris Waller-trained Home Affairs who beat his star stablemate and last year’s champion Nature Strip in a close finish.
Home Affairs was also the first three-year-old Lightning Stakes winner since Fastnet Rock (2005) 17 years prior.
The 2023 Black Caviar Lightning winner was the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained 1000m specialist filly Coolangatta ($9) who won the event fresh to become the first successful filly in 19 years.
The Black Caviar Lightning 2024 winner was the hugely successful Mark Walker-trained mare Imperatriz ($1.60F) who won the race after a fighting finish with Private Eye to post her ninth Group 1 win and kick off her autumn with style.
The 2025 Black Caviar Lightning winner was the Mitchell Freedman trained four-year-old Exosphere mare Skybird ($26) who drove through from last to first to become the race’s longest-priced winner in the 71-year history of the event.
