Victoria Derby Winners & Betting (Warning. Photo: Steve Hart) -

Looking for early information on this year’s Victoria Derby? The expert tipsters at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.

The time-honoured Victoria Derby is the blue chip race for three year old stayers during the spring and is held on Day 1 of Flemington’s iconic Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The VRC Derby runs as part of Derby Day, which is known as a day for racing purists with all events on the card holding Group status. Derby Day is also when the punters show up in black and white attire and takes place on the Saturday prior to Melbourne Cup Day, which is held on the first Tuesday of November each year.

The same day in Sydney, Rosehill Gardens hosts its own huge race meeting headlined by the $10 million The Golden Eagle and also featuring the $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) along with the $1 million Winners Stakes (1300m).

Contested over 2500m, the Victoria Derby is a set weights event run and won since 1855. A stallion-making race, it now offers $2 million in prize money and no filly has won since Frances Tressady (1923) with most opting to take on their own kind two days later in the Kennedy Oaks.

The Moonee Valley Vase is a key lead-up into the Victoria Derby with Efficient (2006) the last to do the double.

Which Horse Will Win The Victoria Derby in 2022?

The best way to pick which horse will win the Victoria Derby in 2022 is to take into account their lead-up spring racing form, assess the barriers and consider their previous record over 2000m plus in distance.

Additional factors to consider when picking the Victoria Derby winner include:

  • Favourites – Between the years of 2006-2021, the favourite has only won the Victoria Derby three times most recently with Hitotsu (2012)
  • Odds – A host of recent Victoria Derby winners over the past decade have jumped at double-digit odds including Johnny Get Angry ($21 in 2020)
  • Barrier – With a sharp turn before a back straight, establishing a good position early on can prove critical.

Victoria Derby 2022 Favourites

Early favourites in Victoria Derby betting for 2022 include untapped Tarzino gelding Cadazio, Hawkes Racing’s Maurice colt Foujita San who broke his maiden status second-up at Sandown with a nearly six length victory and the Graeme Rogerson-trained Group 1 performed Sharp ‘N’ Smart

Ace High ($7 in 2017) followed by Hitotsu ($4 in 2021) was the last Victoria Derby favourite to win.
