Looking for early info on this year’s Tramway Stakes? The experts at Neds have put together everything you need to know before this year’s race.
Run over 1,400 metres, Tramway Stakes is a Group 2 race taking place at Randwick Racecourse as part of the Chelsmford Stakes Day card in early September each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
With a $250,000 prize purse as of 2022, it attracts a quality field of middle distance spring hopefuls tougher Group 1 races including the George Main Stakes (1600m) and Epsom Handicap (1600m) both run over the Randwick mile. Sincero (2011) was the last galloper to complete the Tramway Stakes – George Main Stakes double, while Kolding (2nd in 2020) was the last Tramway graduate to back-up and win the George Main next start.
The Tramway Stakes is run at set weights plus penalties with the winner earning an Epsom Handicap ballot exemption. Hauraki (2016) was the last horse to win the Tramway Stakes – Epsom Handicap double in a single season.
In 2021 Zaaki won the Tramway Stakes as the favourite before heading south to salute in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m). He was third next-up in the Caulfield Stakes and went on to win Flemington’s Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) after being scratched from that year’s Cox Plate field on race morning as the favourite. Zaaki further franked the Tramway form the following autumn winning the $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m).

Which Horse Will Win The Tramway Stakes in 2022
The best way to pick which horse will win the Tramway Stakes in 2022 is to take into account their lead-up spring racing form, assess the barriers, and consider the weight each horse will carry.
Additional factors to consider when picking the Tramway Stakes winner include:
- Sydney Stunners – Local horses, especially those that have gained experience on the Randwick track, have a strong record in the race.
- Favourite Factor – Until the back-to-back wins of Dreamforce (2019, 2020) and Zaaki (2021), no Tramway Stakes winner had jumped at single-figures since 2011.
