The Everest is the richest turf race in the world with the unique buy-in sprint feature worth an unprecedented $20 million as of 2023. Inaugurated in 2017 the Special Condition feature takes place at Royal Randwick Racecourse in late October as the key event of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

Now part of a wider The Everest Carnival full of seven-figure races, The Everest is contested by 12 of the world’s fastest horses and takes place over 1200m as a weight-for-age race.

There are 12 spots in The Everest field with positions purchased by slot holders at a cost of $600,000 each. Those slot holders then select a star horse to represent them in the event, which is now recognised as one of the world’s most iconic horse races despite original concerns it would be seen as a race only for elitists.

Slots in this race can be traded, sold as shares or leased and give those in the mix a shot at taking out a first prize purse of $6.2 million!

The opening two editions of The Everest race were won by Redzel before a new race record was set by the Chris Waller-trained Yes Yes Yes in 2019, the three-year-old defeating the older sprinters in brilliant fashion.

The Everest also serves as a key lead-up into Flemington’s Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m), a double completed by Redzel in 2017. In 2019 the VRC Sprint Classic winner Nature Strip improved on a lead-up fourth in The Everest results.

Caulfield’s Group 3 The Heath 1100 Stakes (1100m) in August may serve as a potential early lead-up for The Everest horses, a race won in 2016 by subsequent inaugural and dual The Everest hero Redzel. The 2021 The Heath 1100 winner Masked Crusader went on to run second in that year’s The Everest quinella.

In 2020 The Everest history was made with the previous year’s sixth place-getter Classique Legend returning to become the first The Everest favourite to win and hand Kerrin McEvoy with his third victory in the event.

The next year trainer Chris Waller won his second The Everest trophy this time with the favourite Nature Strip (2021) who saluted in the event at his third attempt.

Nature Strip attempted a title defence as the odds-on favourite in 2022, but only managed to run fourth behind the undefeated three-year-old Giga Kick who became the longest-priced The Everest winner in history at $21 odds.

The Everest results previously impacted the name of the $3 million Winners Stakes race held on The Golden Eagle Day at Rosehill in late October. Each season the Winners Stakes was renamed in honour of the previous year’s The Everest winner up until 2024. From 2024 onwards the Winners Stakes will be known as the Russell Balding Stakes after the former Racing NSW chairman Russell Balding.

which horse will win The Everest 2024?

Which horse will win the 2024 The Everest comes down to a number of key form factors including the barriers, form over the 1200m distance and their race experience. When picking The Everest winner it is important to consider:

  • TJ Smith Stakes – The autumn’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes held at the same track / distance is a crucial form race for The Everest. Dual TJ Smith Stakes champion Nature Strip won the 2021 The Everest at his third attempt and went on to become a three-time TJ Smith Stakes winner in 2022. In 2023 the TJ Smith Stakes winner I Wish I Win went on to run a brave second in that spring’s The Everest results.
  • Past Results – Horses that ran well in the previous year’s The Everest results are worth looking at for the latest edition. Nature Strip was fourth in 2019 and seventh in 2020 before heading the 2021 The Everest results. In 2023 Private eye ran third in The Everest trifecta behind his winning stablemate Think About It after a second the year before to Giga Kick.
  • Premiere Lead-Up – The Group 2 Premiere Stakes is a key lead-up into the race with the 2020 The Everest winner Classique Legend (2nd) recently coming out of the race 2021 Premiere Stakes winner Masked Crusader ran a brave next-up second in the 2021 The Everest quinella. Think About It (2023) was the last horse to complete the Premiere Stakes – The Everest race double.

the everest 2024 FAVOURITES

The early favourites in The Everest 2024 betting include last year’s runner-up I Wish I Win who recently won the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup in Brisbane, the 2022 winner Giga Kick, and Ciaron Maher’s ace mare Bella Nipotina.

Classique Legend ($4.20 in 2020) became the first The Everest favourite in history to salute for the punters before Nature Strip ($3.70 in 2021) won the following year for the punters.

Think About It ($4.40 in 2023) is the latest The Everest favourite to win.

There was a notable upset in 2022 with Giga Kick saluting at the longest-priced winning The Everest odds of $21, while the odds-on favourite Nature Strip ran fourth.
