Sandown Hillside<\/a> hosts 10 races on Saturday with renovations still underway at Moonee Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $1 million Moir Stakes<\/a> is the highlight on the program, where multiple Group 1 winner Giga Kick resumes for a high-octane battle down the straight against last-start Group 3 winner Natural Fling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pair of Listed races, as well as the Group 3 Chautauqua Stakes<\/a>, make up a quality day of black-type racing, and it’s worth noting the track is rated a Soft 5 with the rail in the True position throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He crossed from the wide barrier and led into the straight, punching clear over the final furlong to put away a decent sized field and go 1.75 lengths clear.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Blake Shinn\u00a0retaining\u00a0the ride is a big plus and another slightly wet track will be right up his alley from a nice inside alley this time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

RUSSIAN DUCHESS (4)<\/strong> looks to be a mare with a bit of upside.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She was fast into stride on the synthetic at Ballarat last start upon settling midfield, finding some nice cover into the turn before putting her foot down to go on and win by\u00a0a length.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is tougher again, but I thought she worked through the gears\u00a0well\u00a0and the booking of Craig Williams is also worth noting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The race before that 3rd of 13 in a Bm62 at Cranbourne on July 16 over 1400m, on rain affected going; 3.5 len behind Touxlove carrying 58kg at $12. BEAST MODE (1)<\/strong>\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0won for a while but has spent a good chunk of his prep racing in tougher Group 3 contests.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hayes-trained gelding was fast into stride a few weeks ago in the Carlyon Stakes, plugging\u00a0away up\u00a0on\u00a0the speed where he was\u00a0ultimately no\u00a0match for Cavalry Girl, beaten 2.5 lengths.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Keep in mind he was competing on a Heavy 8 that day, so coming back in grade should help this time around. Blake Shinn\u00a0sticks\u00a0and\u00a0he\u2019ll\u00a0be just as\u00a0hard to catch in the late stages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CRUISERWEIGHT (3)\u00a0<\/strong>didn\u2019t\u00a0make the cut last\u00a0week at\u00a0Caulfield as one of the emergencies, but\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no doubt\u00a0he\u2019ll\u00a0be hard to beat on Saturday with close to six weeks between runs since his last assignment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This talented four-year-old trained by the Hayes boys saw his unbeaten run end at\u00a0Caulfieldwhen\u00a0he went down as the\u00a0favourite,\u00a0overracing\u00a0early and never really adjusting to a tempo that\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0suit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To his credit, he\u00a0plugged on\u00a0fairly to finish fourth, but after being caught wide early without cover and forced to settle closer to the speed, this looks like a much more winnable assignment fourth-up with an encouraging jump out win between runs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The start before that favourite; settled well back; won by 1.0 len at Caulfield on July 11 over 1400m on a rain affected track defeating Celtics carrying 54kg at $3. PORTINATI (10)<\/strong> should have some fans after\u00a0running on\u00a0late for fourth in the Group 3\u00a0Quezette\u00a0Stakes a fortnight ago at Caulfield.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She was a long way back at the turn angling out wide, running on well to close the gap over the late stages after she was shifted off her line briefly at the\u00a0250m\u00a0mark.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stripping fitter now with three runs under her belt and a nice soft gate offering her every opportunity to find cover this time, she should be\u00a0suited\u00a0getting out over\u00a01300m\u00a0for the first time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BLIND RAISE (3)<\/strong> returns to the races for the\u00a0Busuttin\u00a0and Young Team hoping to replicate his debut win at this trace in early April.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The son to Ace High put the writing on the wall with a tidy two-length win, going on to claim the Listed ANZAC Day Stakes at Flemington by the same margin a few weeks later.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was out of his depth in the Group 2 Sires\u2019 Produce at Eagle Farm last time out where he was up on the speed early and seen weakening badly after overcoming a wide gate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether\u00a01300m\u00a0is a little on the short side for him fresh is a fair question, but the gate and Shinn are two big factors working in his\u00a0favour.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EVAPORATE (2)<\/strong> was entitled to run third in the PB Lawrence Stakes a few weeks\u00a0ago,\u00a0given he was forced to round up the field early from the wide gate\u00a0in order to\u00a0find the front.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The son to Per\u00a0Incanto\u00a0ran out of petrol tickets when it mattered, beaten 1.5 lengths by Cosmic Crusader, who has since gone on to run third in last week\u2019s Group 1\u00a0Memsie\u00a0Stakes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fitter now second-up and well-suited over a slightly longer\u00a0trip,\u00a0he\u2019ll\u00a0be\u00a0very hard\u00a0to beat with a much better gate to his name.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GIGA KICK (1)<\/strong> is the pick on sheer class and ability.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0seen him since the\u00a0All Aged\u00a0Stakes during the autumn when he was beaten just over four lengths, a race that never really went to plan after settling a long way back from the speed and\u00a0failing to run\u00a0on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Form around the winner\u00a0Beiwacht\u00a0really stands out on the resume though, and although\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0going on close to a year since his last win, he\u00a0did go within half a length of\u00a0Joliestar\u00a0when second in the TJ Smith Stakes the start prior.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Off two good jump outs leading in, he maps to settle in the back half of the field and save his best for the finish.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WARNIE (3)<\/strong> is\u00a0very\u00a0dangerous\u00a0I feel coming off a massive first-up effort behind\u00a0Shadhavar\u00a0in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes at\u00a0Caulifled.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ciaron Maher\u2019s gelding was away cleanly and settled dead last in running, eventually working his way to the outside down the straight where he was seen quickening well to finish 1.5 lengths fourth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0son to\u00a0Highland Reel ate in the margin over the final 50m and has a likable second-up record to his name.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0been a while since he tasted a win, but the extra distance, plus Mark Zahra\u2019s experience in the saddle, only\u00a0strengthen\u00a0his claims.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
