The Memsie Stakes holds a special place in Australian horse racing history.     Treasurethe Moment added her name to the honour roll in 2025, while Mr Brightside claimed victory in 2023. Behemoth was particularly impressive, becoming a dual winner after taking consecutive editions in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Memsie Stakes Info & History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Memsie Stakes was first run at Caulfield in 1899, with Veneda winning the inaugural edition. Although the race has undergone changes to its conditions and distance over the decades, it has remained an important fixture on the Victorian racing calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The race was contested over longer distances during much of its early history before settling at 1,400 metres from 1980 onwards. It was upgraded to Group 1 status in 2013, and that\u2019s unlikely to change anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Over more than a century, champions including Phar Lap, Ajax, Eurythmic, Manikato, Makybe Diva, Sunline, and So You Think have won the race. Ajax won three consecutive editions, while Lord holds the record with four victories from 1958-1961. That\u2019s the type of thoroughbred needed to win the Memsie Stakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That remarkable history helps explain why the Memsie Stakes continues to command such respect. It is more than an early-season Group 1; it is a race that has repeatedly served as a springboard for some of Australia’s greatest thoroughbreds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
