The World Cup third-place playoff<\/a> is never the game either side wants to be in, and for two heavyweights like France and England, this one will feel like a pretty hollow consolation prize.<\/p>\n

France were outclassed by Spain in Wednesday\u2019s 2-0 semi-final defeat, while England suffered another brutal tournament gut-punch, giving up a late lead against Argentina before unravelling in extra time.<\/p>\n

Both camps will be hurting, but England\u2019s exit feels the tougher one to shake. Thomas Tuchel\u2019s side looked on course for the final until the 85th minute, and after collapsing late, the big question is how quickly they can reset.<\/p>\n

Tuchel also has plenty to answer for tactically after his defensive changes against Argentina drew criticism, with Harry Kane admitting England became too comfortable once they were in front. That is hardly ideal preparation for a France side loaded with pace, power and match-winning quality.<\/p>\n

England\u2019s structure can absolutely trouble France when they get it right, but their cracks have been visible throughout the tournament. Against players like Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele, one lapse can be enough, and with England\u2019s motivation also a concern, France look the side to trust.<\/p>\n
