Another pivotal early round encounter between two sides familiar with the Thursday night stage. A spirited second half saw the Dogs roar back against the Hawks last week, led by some heroics from Tim English and Marcus Bontempelli. The Crows pulled off\u00a0their own Thursday night heist with a controversial one-point win over\u00a0Geelong,\u00a0but\u00a0find\u00a0themselves as outsiders with only two wins away from Adelaide all season. Suddenly, both of these sides are playing lockdown\u00a0defence\u00a0\u2013 the Crows holding their last five opponents to under 80\u00a0points, and\u00a0holding Hawthorn to only one second half goal last week. With the Total set at 181 points, the Under\u00a0looks\u00a0a good play.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Safe to assume the Cats have had this game circled on the calendar after they\u00a0lost by\u00a0nine goals to the Suns in\u00a0Opening\u00a0Round. Fast forward to Round 14 and both\u00a0side\u00a0are coming off\u00a0back to back\u00a0losses, placing each side in the potential \u2018pretender\u2019 pile when it comes to genuine Finals threats.\u00a0Gold Coast have never won at The\u00a0Cattery\u00a0and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0hard to entertain their chances on Friday with the likes of Lachie Weller and Bailey Humphrey under injury clouds.\u00a0The Cats have been their own worst enemy in front of the sticks in recent weeks, but back on their home deck with a\u00a0relatively\u00a0fit\u00a0squad,\u00a0this should be theirs to lose.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A quick turnaround for the Dees following a narrow eight-point win over the Pies on Monday. Brody Mihocek will be out indefinitely after fracturing his neck, but the Dees\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0be too concerned against a Bombers outfit averaging the third-fewest goals in the league. That said, the Dons surprised Melbourne at Gather Round earlier in the year, running out seven goals winners thanks to a masterclass from Nate Caddy and Archie Roberts. Essendon dominated the\u00a0clearances and played with an aggressive attacking edge, lapping up the wet conditions to show some signs of life. Things have gone south since then, but the Dees could be just as vulnerable coming off an emotionally charged King\u2019s Birthday win.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Will we see a response from North following a disastrous 124 point hiding at the hands of Fremantle? This is technically a home game for the\u00a0<\/span>Roos<\/span>, but the Eagles will be up for it after\u00a0<\/span>erasing a 30-point margin to knock off\u00a0<\/span>North Melbourne way\u00a0<\/span>back in Round 2.\u00a0<\/span>Harley Reid versus North\u2019s midfield is a key area to\u00a0<\/span>watch, but<\/span>\u00a0given the turnover problems these two sides have had all year, this shapes\u00a0<\/span>as<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>back and forth<\/span>\u00a0battle with plenty of momentum swings. The Swans are at their best when they control the flow and find uncontested targets, but Port has enough firepower through the middle to really make this a contest on their home deck. The battle between Aliir\u00a0Aliir\u00a0and the Swans forwards\u00a0will\u00a0decide this one, but I think it might be closer than the bookies expect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tough one to get a feel for with\u00a0almost even\u00a0money on offer. The Saints locked in defensively last week and took a high-scoring Swans team right down to the wire \u2013 an encouraging performance with growing pressure on Ross Lyon to succeed. The Giants, meanwhile, had a week off after\u00a0putting away\u00a0Brisbane and Melbourne successively before the bye. On paper,\u00a0we\u2019ve got\u00a0two contrasting styles of play. The Saints like to shut down and get behind the ball, while the Giants have rediscovered their attacking flare with speed through the corridor and quick inside 50\u00a0entires. We\u2019ve seen St Kilda hang around in games like this all season but fail at the final\u00a0hurdle. With fresh legs and a chance to really cement their spot in the Wild Card picture, the Giants get the nod in what should be a tight one.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
