The Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival inches closer on Saturday as the time-honoured Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes<\/a> starts to take shape at Caulfield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two-year-old sprinters will be on full display in both preview races early on the 10-race card, while the Group 3 Manfred Stakes<\/a>\u00a0pits recent Fillies Classic winner Salty Pearl against an equally competitive field over\u00a01200m.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EUROCANTO (1)<\/strong> gets Jamie Melham in the\u00a0saddle\u00a0first-up for the Hayes boys.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This colt by Per\u00a0Incanto\u00a0put the writing on the wall when he came out and won the\u00a0Maribyrnong\u00a0Trial race at Flemington in early October, storming the line late from a midfield position out wide.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was quickly put away in time for the autumn and really caught the eye when winning a recent trial at Werribee. Drawn well and likely to be saved for the finish again, he looks tough to hold out in the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G)<\/a>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GHANA\u2019S AKAN (3)<\/strong> looks another strong hope for the Ciaron Maher stable with Jamie Melham on board.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Street Boss filly caught the eye when running second on debut in the Geelong Diamond to start the month, angling four-wide into the straight to eventually run on well after getting a little wayward early on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019s still got some maturing to do, but if she\u2019s saved for late again from the wide gate and finds cover early, she\u2019ll be just as strong when it counts in the fillies’ edition of the BD Preview<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019s\u00a0gone unplaced in two runs\u00a0back but\u00a0was strong to the\u00a0line\u00a0last start at Geelong, winding up with a big run to finish fifth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The mare by Written Tycoon was another one caught five-wide into the straight, and although\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0got a tricky gate to contend with again on\u00a0Saturday,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0clearly got a turn of foot that should see her handle\u00a01400m\u00a0nicely.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Godolphin filly was all class winning by 1.75 lengths over\u00a0100m\u00a0shorter, hitting her stride three-wide down the straight in what was a\u00a0comfortable\u00a0display a long way out from the post.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She was no match at Stakes level last year in the Atlantic Jewel at The Valley, but that\u00a0isn’t\u00a0to say she\u00a0can’t\u00a0handle this step up in grade with more maturity on her side. Lightly-raced\u00a0for a five-year-old, the Archibald-trained gelding has been around the mark in similar contests this prep, finding the cash in all three starts as he gets out over longer distances.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He had a chance to win two weeks ago at Flemington where a four-wide position cost him a stride or two, but he should\u00a0benefit\u00a0from the claim on Saturday if Ryan Houston can find cover early around midfield.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hayes boys sent him around in a couple of Stakes races last year before having a crack at the Group 1 Moir<\/a> at The Valley, valuable experience for a five-year-old looking to take the next step now. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019s\u00a0trialed\u00a0up well running second in a recent heat at\u00a0Werribee\u00a0and it helps knowing\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0also a multiple winner over\u00a01000m\u00a0with six wins and a couple of placings to his name. Another great ride in Jamie Melham\u2019s book, he should be\u00a0going\u00a0very close.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She faded badly last start at Geelong off a lengthy break, looming between a pair of runners down the straight but never really giving much of a kick under Ben Melham.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make of that performance what you will, but she was a very impressive winner fresh at Sandown to kick off her winter prep last year, backing that performance up with a well-timed win down the Flemington straight where she knocked off Espana right on the line. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ben Melham knows her inside and\u00a0out\u00a0and\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0drawn to get another cozy run along the inside from barrier 2.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hayes-trained gelding has been kept fresh for the run, scratched from a more recent Saturday meeting in\u00a0favour\u00a0of this race stepping back to the mile with a recent\u00a0Werribee\u00a0trial between runs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We know\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0an honest type who will run a big race, and since\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0proven himself with\u00a0big\u00a0weight,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0really no reason to doubt him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
