Like the Eagles, Detroit has been proactive signing stars earlier rather than later, so they don\u2019t wait for the price of the brick to go up.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ll do it this year, and in three years Gibbs will look like a bargain.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahh. There it is.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actual question: What will he look like in three years?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so, we return to the old chestnut: What\u2019s a running back worth?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mid-late 2010s after a string of catastrophic contracts handed to guys like Ezekiel Elliott, Melvin Gordon, Le\u2019Veon Bell, David Johnson, and Todd Gurley the prevailing wisdom was that you never give a running back a second contract.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s too much wear and tear on the bodies for there to be any value outside of the player\u2019s first three years or so.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some have worked, like Christian McCaffrey\u2019s big deal, but you just shouldn\u2019t take the risk. The opportunity cost is too high, especially in a capped sport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The teams who handed out the deals to the next wave of running backs were in full Lindsay and Tobias talking about an open relationship mode: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Po4adxJxqZk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cthis never works for anybody\u2026but it might work for us\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This question has become more nuanced in recent years. Relatedly, we also confirmed it\u2019s still a dependent position.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does all that mean for Gibbs and the Lions?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s deal with the new lessons first.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Gibbs was drafted in 2023, he was the perfect lightning to David Montgomery\u2019s thunder, providing speed and X-factor in the offence, running behind an utterly dominant offensive line.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was flourish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lions, now, however look to be fading. They have lost most of their interior offensive line stars that Gibbs was initially running behind, most notably Frank Ragnow and Jonah Jackson.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SXmm4SAYlZ0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">While it\u2019s not affected Gibbs\u2019 production, it\u2019s now on Gibbs to get more than the line blocks for him rather than living a dream life behind a dominant line.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the line attrition, Montgomery clearly isn\u2019t the same player he was two years ago, and Gibbs is now the unquestioned lead back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Lions getting older and more expensive, Gibbs is more likely to become the foundation rather than the flourish. A reality that almost never leads to winning games.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now to history. To me, the closest comparison is the Zeke extension with the Cowboys. Obviously they are far different archetypes of players, but in terms of situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I can\u2019t lie, I miss Ezekiel Elliott. Look at the way he used to decimate defenses.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/u3b2L4Uyxp\">pic.twitter.com\/u3b2L4Uyxp<\/a><\/p>&mdash; DakMuse (@DakMuse4) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DakMuse4\/status\/1977056602818548025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 11, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One similarity lies in how they are talked about.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zx3ozxX4AjE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Zeke deal came after a string of bad running back contracts, but pick-me Zeke wasn\u2019t like other running backs<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was the running back that you could depend on and crucially, like Gibbs, he was the player that made the offence go rather than the quarterback.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You had to sign him. Just like the Lions do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another similarity: both were drafted behind dominant offensive lines that had begun to fade by extension time, a development that went largely unnoticed by the public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a key point of difference, however.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zeke got his 6 year, $90m extension after his fourth year whereas this would be after Gibbs\u2019 third. By the time of the extension Zeke had about 550 more touches than Gibbs does to this point in his career, not to mention Zeke being relied on significantly more heavily as a blocker.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">THROWBACK: When as a rookie Ezekiel Elliott STOOD UP All-Pro safety Kam Chancellor.<br><br>\ud83d\ude33<br><br>INSANE.<br> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6O0JmBvwVR\">pic.twitter.com\/6O0JmBvwVR<\/a><\/p>&mdash; MLFootball (@MLFootball) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLFootball\/status\/1994892878737535130?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 29, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After Zeke got his deal, he only had over 1,000 yards once more in his career and his contract was little more than an albatross for the Cowboys almost instantly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what does it mean for Gibbs and Lions?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t think his likely extension goes anywhere near as badly as Zeke\u2019s did because of how much less work there is on Gibbs. I\u2019d also be surprised if the length of the commitment and the money associated is close to 6 years for $90m even without adjusting for inflation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I just can\u2019t escape the Lindsay and Tobias<em> <\/em>of it all.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time I delude myself into thinking it might work for the team extending their running back, basically other than Christian McCaffrey getting extended by the Niners, I\u2019ve been wrong.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derrick Henry with the Titans? Wrong. Dalvin Cook with the Vikings? Wrong. Nick Chubb with the Browns? Wrong.
