With the success of the Big Bash, the AFL is set to debut their short form version in Adelaide.

The rules are little different to your traditional version of AFL.

The game is played on a soccer style rectangular field, with seven-a-side teams playing with experimental rules. Players will be awarded 10 points for goals kicked outside of 40 metres, and each game runs for twenty minutes. If the tournament proves successful, expect to see AFLX played internationally at some point in the future.

With most teams in the competition having one eye on round one of the season, expect to see some of the league’s lesser known youngsters take the field on Friday.

There is plenty of value from a betting perspective and we have analysed the teams below!

Tip: Collingwood to win at $3.50

Adelaide

The Crows have opted to give some big match exposure to some of the younger names on their list. While they may be away from the hallowed confines of the Adelaide Oval, expect the crowd to be a factor at Hindmarsh stadium. The Crows have included father and son duo Ben Jarman and Jackson Edwards in the squad. Jake Kelly and Andy Otten are the only two members from Adelaide’s Grand Final Day side to get a run in the tournament.

Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide have fired the first shot of the season by putting together a fairly experienced list. Power fans will get the chance to see new recruits Jack Watts and Jack Trengrove in Port colours for the first time. Robbie Gray is a late withdrawal from the Power squad with injury.

Geelong

Geelong have named a powerful squad that includes the likes forward Tom Hawkins, Mark Blicavs and Daniel Menzel. While the Cats have left out Patrick Dangerfield and Gary Ablett, the inclusion of Hawkins gives them a distinct height advantage up forward.

Collingwood

Collingwood are the early favourites to get their hands on the trophy in Adelaide. The Pies have named the experienced trio of Jarryd Blair, Steele Sidebottom and Josh Thomas. The Pies have no major injury concerns and have opted for speed over size in their final squad.

Fremantle

Fremantle won’t be using the pre-season tournament to redeem their shocking 2017 season. The Dockers have opted to leave superstar Nate Fyfe back in Perth. Fremantle will use the tournament to unveil top ten draft pick Andrew Bradshaw. Bradley Hill and Michael Walters bring the experience to relatively young Dockers line up.

West Coast

The Eagles have opted to give their youngsters some exposure to AFL football. West Coast stars Josh Kennedy and Nic Naitanui will be kept in cotton wool for round one of the AFL season. With the level of experience in their squad the Eagles will be focusing on developing their younger brigade for the rigours of AFL footy.

The AFL has never had that much luck with pre-season tournaments over the years.
