But was he judged too harshly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing predominantly out of position at Manchester United, Pogba made over 150 appearances in a six-year stint, scoring 29 goals and winning the Europa League and the EFL Cup in the 2016\/17 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also won the 2018 FIFA World Cup, scoring in the Final in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harry Maguire is another example of a Manchester United player who joined with a high price tag of \u20ac87.00m, which made him the most expensive defender in the world until Manchester City signed Josko Gvardiol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another player who was excellent on his day, but ridiculed for a price tag he had no say in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Costing more than Virgil Van Dijk proved to be a curse, as comparisons ran rampant and every poor touch was scrutinised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so after Paul Pogba, he became the scapegoat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Florian Wirtz becomes the MOST expensive Premier League signing of all time \ud83d\udcb0\ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/crxi6vs0zZ\">pic.twitter.com\/crxi6vs0zZ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; OneFootball (@OneFootball) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OneFootball\/status\/1936130243057651767?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 20, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With transfer fees becoming higher every season, we\u2019re starting to see a pattern of high-fee signings leaving their clubs within a few seasons after failing to hit the ground running, and it\u2019s clear as day that the price on their backs also puts a target on their back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t take the league by storm from day one, you\u2019re scapegoated immediately. In the modern era of reactionary social media commentary and bitter ex-player punditry, it\u2019s easy to see why pressure isn\u2019t breeding diamonds anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are obviously outliers to this phenomenon, but not many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin De Bruyne arrived at Manchester City for a fee of \u20ac76.00m and quickly established himself as one of the best players in his position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virgil Van Dijk did the same when he revolutionised the Liverpool defence and made his \u20ac84.65m look like a bargain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Declan Rice is making \u20ac116.60m look like a steal with his transformative performances in the Arsenal midfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But these are just a few examples, for most of these high-priced superstars, their transfer fee has been their curse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Looking forward to this Jack Grealish regen \ud83d\ude4c <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xtquhrHMeM\">pic.twitter.com\/xtquhrHMeM<\/a><\/p>&mdash; ESPN UK (@ESPNUK) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESPNUK\/status\/1957389396094726340?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 18, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The most recent example is Jack Grealish, who, despite being instrumental in Manchester City\u2019s historic treble-winning campaign, has widely been considered a failure across his four-year spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 12 goals in 94 games and seven titles to his name, Grealish has now joined Everton on loan after a significant dip in form last season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A brilliant player on his day, but his \u20ac117.50m price tag made fans expect things he simply wasn\u2019t capable of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other players who have suffered the same fate as Jack Grealish include Joao Felix, who has bounced from club to club since his \u20ac127.20m move to Atletico Madrid in 2019, Romelu Lukaku, who failed in spells at both Manchester United and Chelsea, and Kai Havertz, who scored a UCL-winning goal that still wasn\u2019t enough to honour his \u20ac100m transfer fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Manchester United, the likes of Antony (\u20ac90m), Jadon Sancho (\u20ac85.00m), and Rasmus H\u00f8jlund (\u20ac77.80m) have all been quickly judged, dropped, and exiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Darwin Nunez has departed Liverpool after failing to live up to his \u20ac85.00m and the fan-forced Nunez x Haaland rivalry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicolas Pepe never won the fans over at Arsenal, and a handful of Chelsea\u2019s recent signings have come under scrutiny for their failure to deliver on the price tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">United paid a combined \u00a3233m for Hojlund, Antony, and Sancho. <br><br>They&#39;re now all either exiled from the squad or being forced to leave. Can Mohammed Kudas help Tottenham avoid another 17th-place finish?
