It was a best on best battle. They combined for 78 disposals, 55 contested, and two goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was footy\u2019s version of the diner scene in <em>Heat<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Heat Restaurant scene || Deniro, Pacino\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LUy2Wx_r0_w?start=22&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, Fyfe got Dangerfield boxed in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had 40, got the three votes, and Freo won the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was clearly better in a high-stakes game than Patty Dangerfield, think about how good that player is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there was the look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fyfe was pretty, but not necessarily rugged like most AFL players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1954840268823290140&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F08%2Fnat-fyfe-the-last-pure-bull%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a paradox: beautiful but playing an ugly game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine if Achilles was dropped into the French mud of World War 1.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reminds me of Brad Pitt in that sense, the common refrain for Pitt is that he\u2019s a character actor in a leading man\u2019s body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Burn After Reading (7\/10) Movie CLIP - Appearances Can Be Deceptive (2008) HD\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7JlG7q-ld8M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fyfe is the same, his face said eye catching key forward or running half back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His game said dog-fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was as grimy as any player I can remember. That peaked in 2015 when he famously played a preliminary final with a broken leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, his nine-year run from 2011 to 2019 was one of the hottest runs of inside footy I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one day it just <em>stopped.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can count on one hand the players that approached his level: Buddy, Ablett, Dusty, and Dangerfield is probably the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of them had shorter post-primes than Fyfe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Injuries played a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his second Brownlow until 2023, he never played more than 15 games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, when he played he averaged a meagre nine contested possessions, starting many games as the sub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he was also a man fit for a certain time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Kendall Roy, he was a cog built to fit one machine and that machine was the heavy contest era of the mid-2010s pioneered by Ross Lyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Footy has moved on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the reason only two players are averaging over 14 contested possessions a game is because the game now is about movement and spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fyfe\u2019s skillset is valuable, but it\u2019s instructive that Matt Rowell \u2013 another midfield bull \u2013 is having the best year of his career when he\u2019s added the outside and disposal skills that Fyfe never did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1921163233710297440&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F08%2Fnat-fyfe-the-last-pure-bull%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you zoom out and look the bigger picture, consider the modern discussion around Michael Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the problem with Carlton? They\u2019re too reliant on contest and don\u2019t do anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The premiership metrics tell us that contest and clearance don\u2019t matter like they used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1954498982908178718&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F08%2Fnat-fyfe-the-last-pure-bull%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fyfe just wasn\u2019t able to move with the times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we look back to the Dangerfield game in 2015, we can identify numerous changes in Dangerfield\u2019s game to the point that now, he\u2019s essentially a key forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was also true of Gary Ablett, who kicked 34 goals as a permanent forward at Geelong in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ablett runs riot | Hawthorn v Geelong | Round 5, 2019 | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7jbsoi1i7HU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dustin Martin did a similar thing, slowly playing less midfield time as he aged and becoming a brilliant half-forward in his twilight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His legendary peers did it, but Fyfe never could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, he wasn\u2019t as explosive as the other four, especially Dangerfield, but I always felt that he could have been an old fashioned key forward like Jack Gunston with better overhead marking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, Fyfe kept raging at the embers of his past glory as the best contest player I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a traditionalist in a modern world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply, he was perfect for a game that no longer exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m glad I saw him at a time where he could be king.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m 29 years old, born in 1996.
