{"id":76235,"date":"2025-07-30T10:48:40","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T00:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.neds.com.au\/blog\/?p=76235"},"modified":"2026-07-03T10:29:45","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T00:29:45","slug":"the-you-dont-want-to-play-these-blokes-rankings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neds.com.au\/blog\/2025\/07\/the-you-dont-want-to-play-these-blokes-rankings\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u201cYou Don\u2019t Want to Play These Blokes\u201d Rankings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Even though the top-8 is incredibly close this year, it feels like there\u2019s a big divide between the real contenders and the teams that have made the finals but are probably making up the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are five teams that can do it: Collingwood, Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, and GWS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But then there are another four teams that are still in the hunt to make the finals and are realistically probably hoping to jag a premiership in a year where each of those top five teams have shown legitimate frailty: Hawthorn, Fremantle, Gold Coast, the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, who do the top-five teams not want to see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve created a \u201cYou Don\u2019t Want to Play These Blokes\u201d ranking system where the following measures go into the pot, you add a bone and a potato and baby we got an upset stew going:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Star-power \/20<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aggressive game-style \/10<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chaos inducement \/10<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Western Bulldogs<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll note that none of these rankings take anything defensive into account, that\u2019s by design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the best teams will no doubt think they can score against anyone because their system and talent is so good. <a>The worry for them will be that they lose in a firefight like Tony Montana.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Scarface (1983) Ending Shootout and Tony Montana&#039;s Death\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ORPeCXiJwyM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To underline the point, the best five teams are four of the five highest scoring teams in footy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who\u2019s fifth? Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on that, I\u2019ll grant you that having the Dogs here are like Wee Bey taking murders in <em>The Wire <\/em>to improve the BPD\u2019s clearance rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They do everything in the measure well and all of their weaknesses aren\u2019t in the measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re dotted with stars through the midfield and forward line, potentially adding the newly in-form Aaron Naughton back into the star discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are aggressive from the back half, sitting second in the league for back half scoring over the last five weeks and third at taking the ball from D50 to a score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1948679745941770651&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F07%2Fthe-you-dont-want-to-play-these-blokes-rankings%2F\" Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They are chaotic in the front half scoring 51.2 ppg from the front half, which would be the second-best mark by any team since 2021 if they keep it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s every chance the Dogs don\u2019t make it, and if they do, all the chat will be about how they\u2019ve only won one game against the current top-9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they\u2019ve not lost by more than four goals in any of their losses to the top-9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running into the Dogs in the first week of the finals is like ocean swimming and running into a great white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z4wGSi9FXak&amp;ab_channel=AssociatedPress\">It\u2019s not likely, you know how to get out of it because you saw Mick Fanning do it, but you won\u2019t have a good time trying.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Star-power: 18<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aggressiveness: 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chaos: 10<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Total: 35<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gold Coast<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The Suns are a bully football team and those top five teams are prefects, which makes them naturally opposed to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Rowell and Anderson, as well as Touk Miller if he\u2019s back and apparently Alex Davies if he\u2019s not, the Suns have the best inside\/out midfield in football, sitting second in getting first possession and first in percentage of first possessions turning into clearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1948156177121935561&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F07%2Fthe-you-dont-want-to-play-these-blokes-rankings%2F\" Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Suns professionally stuff teams into wheelie bins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than those guys, they have the chaos factor of Ben Long, Ben King as a genuine key forward, Sam Collins in the back half returning, potentially Dan Rioli if he can get back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are stars there, but the stars don\u2019t make the car go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In classic Hardwick fashion, and the Davies masterclass is the latest example of it, he\u2019s the classic do your job coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a role that needs to be filled, and outside of a special few, the role can almost always be filled by someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex Davies is just the next Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, who\u2019s the next Jake Aarts etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardwick is footy\u2019s pre-eminent infrastructure coach, non-Chris Scott edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their aggressiveness is marked down too because, even though with Rioli and Noble they have added a lot of bounce off half back, they struggled to turn that transition into scores sitting 17<sup>th<\/sup> in D50 to scoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a>However, it <em>feels<\/em> better than that.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1905814205510373750&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F07%2Fthe-you-dont-want-to-play-these-blokes-rankings%2F\" Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaos-wise, they aren\u2019t as good as those elite Hardwick teams because they have the talls and mid-sizers but not the genuine smalls like Castagna and Butler that bring the ruckus. <a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re only this high because Ben Long is footy\u2019s Joker, whose plan doesn\u2019t go much further than kick goals and hurt people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I could see Gold Coast bringing the hurt across the board to one of those top teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Star-power: 15<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aggressiveness: 7<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chaos: 9<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Total: 31<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fremantle<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>God, damn I hate that they\u2019re here. I should love this team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re like <em>American Gangster<\/em>. I remember going to that film thinking it should be incredible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denzel, Russell Crowe, organised crime, Ridley Scott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s four of my five favourite things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"American Gangster 2007 Movie ( 25,000 Alpaca Blot That Shit)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-neSwXEXLxw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I saw it and it was fine. Nothing wrong with it. Didn\u2019t titillate me though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freo has just about as much star power as that film with Serong, Brayshaw, Bolton, Treacy, Jackson, now the returning Young and I could go on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1949042110419829247&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F07%2Fthe-you-dont-want-to-play-these-blokes-rankings%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is, frankly, a more top heavy list than the Dogs and so much of that talent is forward of the ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why are they so boring right up until they have to be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a>It\u2019s like the ghost of Ross Lyon, fresh off a turn it on when you have to masterpiece, never left.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Last Two Minutes: St Kilda v Melbourne | Round 20, 2025 | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FW41jtGrUjY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam Simpson, who I would never hire again based on his TV commentary where he only compliments defensive teams, loves it but I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justin Longmuir has somewhat changed up his risk appetite over the last two months, but you just want it to be more given the talent he has on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the kind of transition mids he has, and rebound being launched by Luke Ryan, you have to be better at going from D50 to F50 than 11<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You just do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaos wise it\u2019s also lacking. Even with guys like Murphy Reid who has to be the rising star for what he\u2019s doing in a good team, Sam Switkowski, and Michael Fredrick, Freo just don\u2019t force enough chaos anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1900766486114738334&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F07%2Fthe-you-dont-want-to-play-these-blokes-rankings%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;That\u2019s how, even in a last five games where you\u2019re 4-1 and playing better than you have all season, you can still be 13<sup>th<\/sup> in front half scoring and 12<sup>th<\/sup> in F50 ground ball get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Star-power: 19<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aggressiveness: 5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chaos: 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Total: 29<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hawthorn<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The Liberal party donor base will be unhappy with this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019d love to see Hawthorn in a final this year I reckon, they\u2019re kind of the inverse Freo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe Sam Mitchell can come up with a bespoke game plan to beat you from the box, but that\u2019s their best bet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s done it before, particularly Adelaide in Round 14 was a real masterpiece, but at a certain point the rubber hits the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who is their best player? I\u2019d say it\u2019s Will Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s not him, it\u2019s Josh Weddle who is injured or Jai Newcombe and I have a soft spot for Dylan Moore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are any of them top 60 players in the AFL?
