Let\u2019s look at the three possibilities.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What if Tom Lynch doesn\u2019t pick Richmond?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I am a Richmond supporter, so this is bleak.<\/p>\n<p>I remember showing up to a friend\u2019s house after the 2017 Grand Final for a post-game party he was hosting, bleary-eyed and ecstatic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dusty caps off a season for the ages | On This Day | 2017 | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zKgoGjstc_E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I hugged one of the other Richmond supporters there and shook a few hands.<\/p>\n<p>One of them, a Collingwood fan, said to me \u201cthat\u2019s the worst team I\u2019ve ever seen win the premiership\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I responded by saying \u201cthat\u2019s not the insult you think it is\u201d, but he might have been right.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 Tigers rode a wave of momentum and were a Castro-style revolutionary force in football, but it wasn\u2019t a stacked list before Lynch came to support Jack Riewoldt.<\/p>\n<p>I think the 2018 prelim against Collingwood, where Dustin Martin played hurt, showed the Tigers that they were fragile.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Richmond v Collingwood Highlights | Preliminary Final, 2018 | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZdX15qhjNB4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In that game, they saw that if a forward-of-centre A-Grader got hurt they were cooked.<\/p>\n<p>Without Lynch in 2019 &#8211; and with Riewoldt playing just 13 games &#8211; Richmond don\u2019t win the premiership.<\/p>\n<p>They certainly don\u2019t win the prelim against Geelong, where Lynch dog-walked Harry Taylor, kicking five \u2013 including three in the second half \u2013 to steer the comeback.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lynch launches Tigers into GF | Game-breaker | Second Preliminary Final, 2019 | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uj1Jq4RMKaw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 2020 premiership is less clearcut, but even in shortened quarters Lynch kicked two goals a game and was a structural pillar in the weirdest season ever.<\/p>\n<p>Without Lynch, Richmond\u2019s 2017 flag is remembered the same way than West Coast\u2019s 2018 flag is: lightning in a bottle.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What if Tom Lynch picks Collingwood?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>If Lynch was available in 2018, I\u2019m positive he makes more of a contest than Brody Mihocek did on the end of the Adam Treloar kick.<\/p>\n<p>He certainly doesn\u2019t let Jeremy McGovern launch the counter that led to the Dom Sheed goal.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dom Sheed seals the Eagles premiership | 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n5KvhryfBJo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But forgive my digression.<\/p>\n<p>The premiership that got away for Collingwood was 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Off the heartbreaker in 2018, the Pies finished fourth because of a dominant defence.<\/p>\n<p>They were just eighth in scoring, with Mihocek leading their goal kicking with just 36.<\/p>\n<p>Lynch kicked 63 that season.<\/p>\n<p>Their lack of scoring power showed up in the finals. The Pies scored 61 points in the qualifying final win against Geelong, and 52 in their loss to GWS in the preliminary final.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Collingwood v GWS | First Preliminary Final, 2019 | AAMI Last Two Minutes | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AhTcg_VGIM0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lynch made a career out of making chicken salad out of chicken shit in outnumbered aerial contests.<\/p>\n<p>That was his job \u2013 don\u2019t lose when the ball surged high inside 50.<\/p>\n<p>Based on that, you just know that he\u2019s jumping at Callum Brown\u2019s kick to the spot with 1:15 to go, instead of Pendlebury and Hoskin-Elliott.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he even marks it. If he does, he goals and the Pies are in a Grand Final against probably Geelong who they already beat without Lynch.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pendlebury&#039;s 300th | Geelong v Collingwood Highlights | Qualifying Final | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3KPhu_7rJb0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Just quietly, Collingwood still hasn\u2019t found a key forward in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>If they don\u2019t win this season, that might be why.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What if Melbourne got Tom Lynch?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>There is no reporting that Melbourne was in the running for Lynch in the 2018 offseason, though they have been linked to him this year for a reason \u2013 they don\u2019t have any key forwards.<\/p>\n<p>They haven\u2019t at all in their run of success which led to one premiership, but three top-4 finishes.<\/p>\n<p>In the non-flag years (2022 and 2023), Melbourne was second and first inside 50 differential.<\/p>\n<p>The issue was that they were astonishingly inefficient with their entries, sitting 14<sup>th<\/sup> for goals per entry in both years.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne lost their four finals by a combined 44 points over the two years, including losses by seven and two points in 2023 to Collingwood and Carlton.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Last Two Minutes: Melbourne v Carlton | Semi-Final, 2023 | AFL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oTwITJc5vxY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What if they were just a bit better? Maybe with a key forward to get on the end of those dump kicks?<\/p>\n<p>This is the hardest one to make the case for.<\/p>\n<p>In the two years that Lynch might have swung Melbourne from a tale mostly of wasted potential to a dynasty after 2021, he played just eight games.<\/p>\n<p>But how much of that was bad luck? Or maybe Richmond conservatism given those years were wasted before they began?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/sport\/afl\/we-want-a-dynasty-the-demons-story-of-2021-and-what-s-next-20210926-p58uwi.html\">If Lynch is healthy, all the \u201cMelbourne dynasty\u201d talk post-2021 might\u2019ve been reality.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rarely has a missing piece been so glaringly obvious.<\/p>\n<p>So, what\u2019s the point of all this?<\/p>\n<p>Five premierships touched, Richmond won two, the Pies might have salvaged 2019 amd Melbourne might have built a dynasty.<\/p>\n<p>All because one guy said yes to Punt Road.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for picking Richmond, Tom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Lynch played his 100th game for Richmond after leaving Gold Coast after the 2018 season.
