{"id":74267,"date":"2025-05-12T10:45:56","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T00:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.neds.com.au\/blog\/?p=74267"},"modified":"2026-07-03T10:29:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T00:29:55","slug":"a-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neds.com.au\/blog\/2025\/05\/a-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Golden Age of Key Forwards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Watching Riley Thilthorpe physically define The Showdown on Saturday night, I thought back to <em>40 Year-Old-Virgin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1921324370418446422&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Before its 2005 release, the biggest comedies invariably involved A listers in their primes \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2djcavCEajA&amp;ab_channel=TrailersPlaygroundHD\">\u00a0Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller <\/a>\u00a0\u2013 paired with legends like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DzUc3Eqzzos\">Jack Nicholson or Robert De Niro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The question at the time was simple: where is the next generation?<\/p>\n<p>It arrived with <em>The 40-Year-Old-Virgin<\/em><em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"KEVIN HART SCENE - The 40 Year Old Virgin\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dtVIZBsHVu0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Steve Carell had just started on <em>The Office <\/em>so he was on a rocket ship, but that film had the following then relatively fresh faces involved in it: Kevin Hart, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Kat Dennings, Jonah Hill, Mindy Kaling, and Stormy Daniels.<\/p>\n<p>The next 20 years of comedy stars\u2014and countless late-night monologues\u2014came from that film.<\/p>\n<p>This season is the key forward\u2019s <em>40-Year Old Virgin <\/em>moment.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not talking about the Logan Morris types\u2014those agile, key forwards who reflect where the game\u2019s headed &#8211; I\u2019m talking about the big men.<\/p>\n<p>The blokes that could have appeared next to Arnie in <em>Predator <\/em>and not looked out of place.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1915715722505814395&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The guys that get Jonathon Brown excited.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the year, I feared they were dying out.<\/p>\n<p>As I saw it, we entered the year with two generations of key forwards.<\/p>\n<p>After them we had a group that seemed more emblematic of the end of something than the start.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Generation One: The Elders (29+). <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>This group took the torch from Buddy Franklin, Tom Hawkins, and Jack Riewoldt, who themselves followed Matthew Richardson, Nick Riewoldt, and Jono Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Now? Just two names: Jesse Hogan and Jeremy Cameron.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Generation Two: In their prime (25-29)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay, Nick Larkey, Ben King, Aaron Naughton, Jake Waterman, and Darcy Fogarty.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1829110716697297065&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Heading into the year, the only bona fide superstar at the level of Cameron or Hogan was Charlie Curnow, and he had two offseason surgeries.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1920782806780613016&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Generation Three: Where are you? (Under 25)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Coming into the year there was just one guy that you knew would be good \u2013 Josh Treacy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1915715722505814395&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Other than him, it was full of projects.<\/p>\n<p>The projects were the gangly but talented Sam Darcy, the oft-injured Riley Thilthorpe, as well as Aaron Cadman, Jacob van Rooyen, and Jed Walter among a few others.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1825460742692483199&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This year, Generations Two and Three have taken big steps.<\/p>\n<p>In Gen Two, King is leading the Coleman and has emerged as a genuine star.<\/p>\n<p>Fogarty has become one of the league\u2019s best link-up forwards\u2014a Tex Walker clone who kills you with his kicking either for goal or around the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The real excitement, though, is Gen Three.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=d24ZpzoZkQE&amp;ab_channel=HenryKrinkle\">Like Paul Bremer said when the U.S. captured Saddam Hussein, ladies and gentlemen we got [them].<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With Sam Darcy and Riley Thilthorpe, we have the guys to take key forward play into the next decade.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1921358860683452554&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Among all key forwards, they are the two highest rated in the AFL, both top-5 in score involvements and top-10 in goal per game average.<\/p>\n<p>These guys impact scoring in an uncommon way.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re so good, they might force defences to change.<\/p>\n<p>Forward lines in general have gone the way of movie stars and generally gotten smaller. There\u2019s a lot more Chalamets than Glenn Powells around.<\/p>\n<p>St. Kilda, currently built around Mitchito Owens at 191cm, is the most extreme example and they\u2019re getting by.<\/p>\n<p>Defences, other than Fremantle, have pretty much followed suit so they don\u2019t get destroyed by chaotic entries and ground balls inside 50.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1918246055533043978&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Thilthorpe and Darcy can punish that.<\/p>\n<p>In The Showdown, Thilthorpe ragdolled defenders who were frankly too small and too weak for him time and again.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1921358860683452554&#038;dnt=true&#038;lang=en_AU&#038;width=500&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.neds.com.au%2Fblog%2F2025%2F05%2Fa-new-golden-age-of-key-forwards%2F\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" style=\"border:0;\" title=\"X Post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=67dK5g5pOtY\">He was like Sonny beating up Carlo.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Adelaide in general was excellent at that on Saturday night. With Fogarty, Thilthorpe, and Walker there isn\u2019t a defence in footy that can match up.<\/p>\n<p>Every time they entered 50, they knew they would have a mismatch with whoever Lachie Jones was forced to play on.<\/p>\n<p>They were like the kid with the magnifying glass burning an ant. Jones was the ant.<\/p>\n<p>What happened in The Showdown will happen more often when there are forwards that can punish smaller defenders.<\/p>\n<p>Given how small defences have become over the last 5 years, the idea that Logan Morris is the new archetype feels misguided.<\/p>\n<p>If defences are getting smaller, go bigger and punish them.<\/p>\n<p>GWS and Hogan did it on Sunday arvo against a smaller Geelong defence.<\/p>\n<p>If I\u2019m right and that\u2019s how footy goes \u2013 good.<\/p>\n<p>The big key forward is what makes our game go.<\/p>\n<p>Footy is better with star key forwards.<\/p>\n<p>Crowds get louder and the energy lifts when he\u2019s around the ball.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q1KZ4rzzUQA&amp;ab_channel=SydneySwans\">When you have one of \u201cthose guys\u201d, you feel like you\u2019re in every game as a fan because one guy that can get so hot that he wins a game on his own.<\/a><br \/>\nBut they\u2019re also a flawed species.
