It was a time of pure joy for the vast majority of Premier League fans.<\/p>\n<p>But they may have gotten carried away.<\/p>\n<p>At the height of City\u2019s downfall, they were still only eight points behind second.<\/p>\n<p>Still in the FA Cup, and while they did finish 22nd in the table, they were still alive in the UCL with a play-off tie against Real Madrid pending.<\/p>\n<p>If there is a team notorious for their end-of-season form, it\u2019s Manchester City.<\/p>\n<p>A six-game unbeaten run in the Premier League saw Pep Guardiola\u2019s bruised giants rise to fourth in the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then they suffered their most embarrassing result of the season with a 5-1 defeat against Arsenal.<\/p>\n<p>Real Madrid scored twice after the 85th minute to secure a 3-2 comeback victory in City\u2019s own backyard, and a Kylian Mbappe hattrick destroyed them in the return fixture.<\/p>\n<p>Their bright 4-0 victory over Newcastle United was immediately erased by another 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, and many still debated whether the Blues would be playing UCL football in 2026.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u274c 29.2% loss-rate this season<br \/>\ud83d\ude32 1.67 goals conceded per game<br \/>\ud83d\udcc9 Nine points behind Liverpool<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of today&#39;s Manchester derby, is this the worst Man City team we have seen under Guardiola? \ud83d\udc47<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UtvHgIPxIh\">https:\/\/t.co\/UtvHgIPxIh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Transfermarkt.co.uk (@TMuk_news) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TMuk_news\/status\/1868264003702853663?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 15, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Something clearly clicked inside the City dressing room, though, because the Cityzens went on a twelve-game run that saw only one defeat, and now sit on the verge of what will technically be a very successful season for the club.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that despite the memes, Pep\u2019s head scratching, and sheer number of weeks that ended in defeat, we may have all overreacted to the consequences of their ruin.<\/p>\n<p>Make no mistake. This downfall, in shock factor, was very real.<\/p>\n<p>For one of the greatest football teams of the modern era, and arguably one of the greatest sides of all time, to fall on their own sword so brutally is something you would only see after simming 20 years into a Football Manager save.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine Pep Guardiola\u2019s FC Barcelona, Sir Alex Ferguson\u2019s Manchester United, or Arsene Wenger\u2019s Arsenal winning only one game in 13.<\/p>\n<p>Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>So, while their incredible downfall was every bit as dramatic as it appeared, the consequences were perhaps carried out of proportion.<\/p>\n<p>To get knocked out of the UCL by defending Champions Real Madrid isn\u2019t the end of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is getting eliminated early from the EFL Cup when they are competing in so many competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester City are in the FA Cup Final for the third consecutive time, and will enter the game as heavy favourites against underdogs Nottingham Forest.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc65\udb40\udc6e\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc7f\ud83d\udcc8 A goal from Kevin De Bruyne in his penultimate game at the Etihad is enough to move Manchester City up to third in the Premier League. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UjvShqdd6h\">pic.twitter.com\/UjvShqdd6h<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; FotMob (@FotMob) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FotMob\/status\/1918414212780478697?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>And with Arsenal completely focused on their UCL semi-finals against PSG and the EPL title sealed by Liverpool, there is a very real chance that Pep Guardiola\u2019s men will overtake the Gunners to finish the season as runners-up.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re looking at one of Manchester City\u2019s worst campaigns in the last decade, yet they may still end the season with two domestic trophies and a second-place league finish.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, they have achieved this without their linchpin midfielder in Rodri, who only played three games for Manchester City this season after suffering an ACL injury in September.<\/p>\n<p>He is the first Manchester City player to win the fabled Ballon d\u2019Or after being crowned the best player in the world in October last year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"in\" dir=\"ltr\">Rodri! \ud83d\ude0d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ballondor?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ballondor<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7DEjISP8W8\">pic.twitter.com\/7DEjISP8W8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ballon d&#39;Or (@ballondor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ballondor\/status\/1851033619634040984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 28, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur look destined to finish 15th and 16th, even if one of them lifts the Europa League title.<\/p>\n<p>Enzo Maresca\u2019s Chelsea will likely lift the UEFA Conference League, but their UCL qualification will come down to the final day as they battle Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, and Aston Villa for the decisive fourth spot.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester City are by no means clear, but they are certainly best positioned to secure a UCL place, with a far kinder fixture list than their four opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Say what you will about their three-month fall from grace, but Manchester City are finishing this season in promising form and will no doubt come back even stronger next season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In one of the strangest, sudden collapses in recent football history, four-peat Premier League Champions Manchester City fell off the face of the earth in a disastrous end to 2024.
