Even what are meant to be their throwaway seasons are elite.<\/p>\n<p>The back half of last season and this season is like the Kevin O\u2019Connell and Brian Flores version of The Big Lebowski.<\/p>\n<p>A movie about an unemployed guy that likes bowling isn\u2019t supposed to be a classic, and yet Kevin O\u2019Connell is the dude, man.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I&#039;m the Dude, Man.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y-uoR1gDjwU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Since Week 9 of the 2023 NFL season (the week after Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles), the Vikings are a top half of the league NFL offence by success rate and EPA\/play and a top ten defence by the same metrics.<\/p>\n<p>Just this season, the Vikings are 10-2 after eking another one out against the Cardinals.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">PRECISION throw by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Vikings?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Vikings<\/a> QB Sam Darnold to WR Justin Jefferson \ud83d\udd25 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XE1559hflY\">pic.twitter.com\/XE1559hflY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Purple Persuasion (@TPPSkol) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPPSkol\/status\/1863318731083931816?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 1, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>They are the third best defence in the NFL by EPA\/play, the second best by success rate and the best defence in the NFL by DVOA.<\/p>\n<p>Defensive co-ordinator Brian Flores is like a leg spinner who has never bowled a leg break.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The mix of dropping bodies into coverage or heating up the QB is what makes Brian Flores&#39; Vikings defense such a pain to go against.<\/p>\n<p>Now in the 2nd year, you can see Vikings defenders becoming more comfortable and adding layers. Look at the communication in the 1st clip. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8I7RmIcFDK\">pic.twitter.com\/8I7RmIcFDK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nate Tice (@Nate_Tice) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Nate_Tice\/status\/1835780878615933009?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 16, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>You have no idea who\u2019s coming, who\u2019s dropping, and what any of it means.<\/p>\n<p>No team in the NFL has blitzed more than the Vikings, generated more hurries, or generated more pressures.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Vikings&#39; Hawk Blitz where no one drops <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OHBMDlQ8rF\">pic.twitter.com\/OHBMDlQ8rF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Matt Fries (@FriesFootball) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FriesFootball\/status\/1843799206924038231?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 8, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>They send pressure and get home at a high rate, but that\u2019s not the genius<\/p>\n<p>The genius is that the five or six that come are always different and impossible to pick.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody in the NFL drops defensive linemen at a higher rate, they always start with 7 on the line and there\u2019s no rhyme or reason to who\u2019s coming and who\u2019s going.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a mind-f**k.<\/p>\n<p>But it is always sound.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the opposite of a Nolan film.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s confusing but doesn\u2019t have plot holes you could drive a train through (everyone tries to get thoughts into other people\u2019s heads every day, it\u2019s not that complicated and Inception has aged terribly).<\/p>\n<p>To that end, the Vikings defence is sixth in the league in yards per offensive play while leading the league in turnovers.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re sound, stout, confusing, and explosive.<\/p>\n<p>They make quarterbacks look like Alberto Falcone revealing his whole plan to Oz just before Oz shoots him in The Penguin \u2013 glazed eyed and confused.<\/p>\n<p>But confusion doesn\u2019t just reign down on passing games.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings are also stout against the run, sitting top of the league in rushing yards per attempt.<\/p>\n<p>They give up the fewest scores per opponent drive.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bit like watching Walter yell at Donny.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t make a lot of sense, the only person who ever even acknowledges Donny is Walter.<\/p>\n<p>Donny probably isn\u2019t really there.<\/p>\n<p>And yet it is excellent.<\/p>\n<p>But with Flores at the controls of the defence, and the personnel improvements they made with adding Jonathan Grenard, Andrew Van Ginkel, Blake Cashman, Shaq Griffin, and even Stephon Gilmore the defence was meant to be pretty good, if not quite this good.<\/p>\n<p>The offence was meant to be a different story.<\/p>\n<p>If the defence is like Phillip Seymour Hoffman, then the offence is like Tara Reid as Bunny: a pleasant surprise.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Vikings simulated heavy blitz looks often against the Bucs, but dropped out into coverage most of the time. Baker had to clutch the ball, leading to checkdowns or scrambles. The lone exception was the TD where Baker was kept clean long enough for the WR to find an open zone. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GaumbKyb3I\">pic.twitter.com\/GaumbKyb3I<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Matt Fries (@FriesFootball) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FriesFootball\/status\/1701412966149591307?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 12, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>They drafted JJ McCarthy with pick 10 of the NFL draft and gave Sam Darnold one year for $9m as the stopgap until McCarthy, who was a bit of projection on draft night, was ready to go in-season.<\/p>\n<p>However, McCarthy tore his meniscus in the preseason and the plan was ostensibly stuffed.<\/p>\n<p>They were then forced into Darnold, who was one of the most accident prone quarterbacks in the league heading into the year, starting the whole season.<\/p>\n<p>Over the first five weeks, it didn\u2019t really matter.<\/p>\n<p>In that period, the Vikings were ninth best in dropback success rate and Darnold was tenth in EPA\/play as he utilised his athleticism and arm to make plays in and out of structure.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sam Darnold \u27a1\ufe0f Justin Jefferson for a 97-yard touchdown \ud83d\ude31<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udfa5 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NFL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NFL<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/925TpQMwll\">pic.twitter.com\/925TpQMwll<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Athletic (@TheAthletic) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAthletic\/status\/1835376564667875493?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 15, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t just on Darnold, obviously.<\/p>\n<p>They have the best receiver in the NFL in Justin Jefferson, a top-10 running game led by Aaron Jones in a renaissance year, and an offensive playcaller in O\u2019Connell who made life easy on his dumb but talented quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>An elite left tackle in Christian Darrisaw also helped, though he is now hurt.<\/p>\n<p>But make no mistake, Darnold made it go, he was the rug that tied the room together.<\/p>\n<p>Since week six, however, Darnold\u2019s season has gone almost as poorly as Tara Reid\u2019s career since The Big Lebowski and American Pie.<\/p>\n<p>In that period, the Vikings are 15th in offensive EPA and 14th in success rate because in large part of Darnold\u2019s two year old-like propensity for accidents.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sam Darnold doing Sam Darnold things, he just threw another one\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ir9xv6Ykg1\">pic.twitter.com\/Ir9xv6Ykg1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; SM Highlights (@SMHighlights1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SMHighlights1\/status\/1855687057299128695?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Darnold is the 26st best quarterback by EPA\/play among quarterbacks who have had over 100 attempts, just ahead of Joe Flacco<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings have turned the ball over the fourth most times this season with 19. Darnold himself counts for 10 picks.<\/p>\n<p>While he\u2019s been a little better since a three pick disaster against Jacksonville, throwing six touchdowns and no picks in his last three games, chances are the most turnover prone quarterback of my lifetime will regress to his mean.<\/p>\n<p>Even still, it won\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings didn\u2019t spend like they think they\u2019re Super Bowl contenders because they don\u2019t think that.
