{"id":68726,"date":"2024-10-10T15:30:28","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T05:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.neds.com.au\/blog\/?p=68726"},"modified":"2024-10-16T15:17:32","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T05:17:32","slug":"brock-purdy-has-always-been-this-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neds.com.au\/blog\/2024\/10\/brock-purdy-has-always-been-this-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock Purdy Has Always Been This Guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My second favourite rom com ever, after The Break-Up, is Crazy Stupid Love.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Ryan Gosling being a movie star, Emma Stone being Emma Stone and Steve Carell wearing better clothes and all of a sudden becoming an object of intense desire after having spent the first part of the movie down in the dumps wearing yellow polos.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The makeover grooming scene || being a man crazy stupid love\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kv0us1JCT9U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Steve Carell makeover, where not that much changes but the outside perception of him, is how I feel about the season Brock Purdy is having.<\/p>\n<p>While the 49ers are 2-3 and Purdy was not great against Arizona, the discussion around him has morphed from \u201cPurdy is a game manager who is running Kyle Shanahan\u2019s offence\u201d to \u201clook at Purdy chucking it down the field. What a gunslinger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this season, the book on Purdy was always that he was like Mac Jones in a better situation. He could keep the train on the tracks but as soon as anything went wrong, he was cooked. He was entirely reliant on his superstar teammates keeping him afloat with run after catch and was, in general, a cog in the machine rather than the machine.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, Purdy has always played like a skinnier Josh Allen.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Brock purdy making plays out of structure and killing the \u201cSystem\u201d QB narrative <\/p>\n<p>A thread  &#8211; \ud83e\uddf5 <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/K3hjIlRG9p\">pic.twitter.com\/K3hjIlRG9p<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; \u2694\ufe0f (@ovolateef) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ovolateef\/status\/1801040595734995032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 12, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He has always made plays out of structure and liked his chances fitting the ball into contested situations, even despite not having a rocket ship attached to his right shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Now, with fewer weapons, Purdy\u2019s always high risk-tolerance is bringing him a tribe of new fans.<\/p>\n<p>The shift in discussion has come amid a general offensive downturn, and a general desire among NFL quarterbacks to check the ball down. Even despite an excellent offensive week in Week 4, not a single team in the NFL is over eight net yards per pass attempt in the NFL and we are 10 yards per team per game below last year\u2019s full season passing yards per team per game numbers.<\/p>\n<p>In that environment Purdy has the second highest average depth of target in the NFL this season behind only Anthony Richardson, who isn\u2019t really playing quarterback as much as he is throwing it a very long way on every play and seeing what happens.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Oh wow. He\u2019s fourth in EPA per drop back, sixth in success rate, and seventh in completion percentage over expectation among players who have started every game.<\/p>\n<p>While he\u2019s still making the easy plays and keeping his offence on the tracks, he\u2019s making unlikely plays out of structure as well. He\u2019s taken off the cool new quarter zips and has the yellow polo on but is still spitting game.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Favorite scene from Crazy stupid Love\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OQ1CAtF-tFY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Even despite his team, that came into the season with serious Super Bowl aspirations after having lost last season, sitting 2-3 Purdy has received plaudits this year for the way that he has kept the passing offence afloat and, more than anything, his willingness to chuck it.<\/p>\n<p>But, again, he was this guy last year.<\/p>\n<p>Among players who played at least 500 snaps in 2023, Purdy was seventh in air yards and first in completion percentage over expectation. He was also first in EPA\/play and success rate while running the best passing offence in the league.<\/p>\n<p>Last year he didn\u2019t quite throw it as far down the field, averaging a little over 8 yards in average depth of target, which was still seventh in the league, compared to 10 this year.
