Given a perfectly timed ride by Ben Thompson, the up-and-comer made up plenty of late ground inside the final furlong charging past the front runners to deny the beaten favourite Medicinal in her best performance yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Percy Sykes Stakes (registered as the Keith Mackay Handicap) is a 1200m mile showdown for two-year-old fillies held on Day 2 of Sydney’s ‘The Championships’ at Royal Randwick each April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Offering $1 million in prize money, the set weights plus penalties event offers a nice next-up option for runners out of events like the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes held the previous month. Jamaea (2nd in 2021) was the last Percy Sykes Stakes winner to come off a Magic Night Stakes lead-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fillies out of the coveted Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes<\/a> may also choose to contest the Percy Sykes dropping down in grade for a still very lucrative prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Run and won since 1960, the race was renamed in 2015 to honour veterinarian Percy Sykes who was best known for saving the life of champion racehorse Tulloch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 2025 Percy Sykes Stakes proved a serious form race, with Tempted returning in the spring to deliver a standout campaign that included a Golden Rose third and a runner\u2011up finish in The Everest<\/a>, the world\u2019s richest turf race. She kept climbing in the autumn too, resuming as a three\u2011year\u2011old to take out the Group 1 Surround Stakes, further stamping the strength of her Percy Sykes win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
