    Gary Portelli\u2019s in-form four-year-old mare\u00a0Verona Rose ($5)\u00a0<\/strong>was excellent thanks to a gun Craig Williams ride to salute by nearly a length in the\u00a02026 Guy Walter Stakes results\u00a0<\/strong>ahead of her Group 1 Coolmore Classic test on March 14. Settling well in the box-seat just off the pace, she really let down on the home straight to run past the leaders and score a tidy victory which saw her\u00a0all-in Coolmore Classic price firm in from $15 to $6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Run over 1,400 metres in late February or early March as part of Randwick’s Verry Elleegant Staks Day (formerly the Chipping Norton Stakes Day) card, the Guy Walter Stakes is a Group 2 event for mares offering $300,000 in prize money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Previously known as the Wiggle Stakes, in 2014 the set weights plus penalties event was renamed in honour of the late, great trainer Guy Walter who prepared 36 Group 1 winners during his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Mares that do well in this race often target the Group 1 Coolmore Classic<\/a> (1500m) at Rosehill in mid-March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Plenty of mares have won both races on different years, but Krone (2021) was the first to do the double in the same season since Danni Martine (2005). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In 2022 the Guy Walter Stakes winner Forbidden Love went on to complete that year’s Group 1 Canterbury Stakes – George Ryder Stakes double before finishing fourth in the Doncaster Mile.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Guy Walter winner in 2023, Hope In Your Heart, ran fourth in that year’s Coolmore Classic and Doncaster Mile before a Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) second to firmly frank the form out of the Group 2 lead-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 2025 Guy Walter form held up strongly, with third placegetter Tashi heading north that winter to claim Brisbane\u2019s Group 1 Tatt\u2019s Tiara<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
