SABAJ (21)<\/strong> hasn\u2019t exactly come up with the friendliest barrier in The Ingham, but I\u2019m still giving this fast\u2011improving four\u2011year\u2011old plenty of respect. He\u2019s been trending the right way all spring and looks ready to hit his peak now he\u2019s fourth\u2011up.<\/p>\n

He kicked off his prep with a solid sixth in the Silver Eagle, then really clicked on Champions Stakes Day at Flemington, lumping 59.5kg and still putting them away by two lengths over the mile. That win wasn\u2019t a fluke either \u2014 he backed it up with a gritty Cranbourne Cup victory, thriving with the drop to 54kg.<\/p>\n

He gets in even lighter this weekend at just 53kg, and with Beau Mertens sticking, that\u2019s another big positive.<\/p>\n

Sure, the wide draw isn\u2019t ideal, but the favourite GRINGOTTS is also parked out there, and SABAJ has the engine to overcome it. If he gets any sort of cover, he\u2019ll be one of the strongest closers in the race and can absolutely make things interesting late.<\/p>\n

First held in 1982, the Villiers Stakes<\/strong> was renamed The Ingham<\/strong> ahead of the 2022 edition of the now $2 million summer feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event has held Group 2 status for over 30 years and the 1600m feature takes place at Royal Randwick in mid-December annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a huge boost in prize money from $750,000 in 2021 to $2 million in 2022, The Ingham also serves as a credible lead-up into the Summer Cup <\/a>held over 2000m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ingham winner also secures a ballot exemption into the following autumn’s iconic Group 1 Doncaster Mile<\/a> (1600m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2021 Villiers Stakes form was franked with the second placed Ellsberg returning the next year for a huge campaign that included a dead-heat victory in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap and his Five Diamonds Prelude \u2013 $2 million Five Diamonds<\/a> double.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
