Run over 1,500 metres, the R.J. Peters Stakes is a Group 3 handicap race taking place at Ascot Racecourse in November as part of the WA Champion Fillies Stakes Day card. With a $200,000 prize purse, it attracts some of Western Australia\u2019s best middle distance runners.<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting out as a Principal race, this race was made a Listed race in 1979, followed by an upgrade to Group 3 in 1986.<\/span><\/p>\n

This race serves as a good lead-up for the Group 1 <\/span>Railway Stakes <\/span><\/a>(1600m), one of the three elite level features of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival as well as January’s Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m). Mississippi Delta (2019) was the last runner to complete the R.J. Peters Stakes – Perth Cup double<\/strong> in the same racing season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2020 the RJ Peters Stakes winner Truly Great finished a disappointing seventh in the Railway Stakes before atoning in his next run to win the Group 1 Northerly Stakes<\/a> (1800m) – which was formerly known as the Kingston Town Stakes.<\/p>\n

In 2021 Kissonallforcheeks won the RJ Peters Stakes before finishing third in both the Railway Stakes and then Kingston Town Stakes.<\/p>\n

In 2022 the RJ Peters Stakes runner-up Alsephina went on to run second in the Railway Stakes trifecta<\/strong> the following weekend while the RJ Peters winner Mojo Rhythm finished a brave fifth in the Group 1.<\/p>\n

The 2023 RJ Peters Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Alsephina running second in the Railway next start. She was also excellent the following spring in Melbourne when third in the 2024 Group 1 Toorak Handicap and fourth in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes.<\/p>\n
