\"Roman<\/p>\n

The Roman Consul Stakes is an important Group 2 sprint race currently run at Rosehill Gardens (moved from Royal Randwick in 2023) on Hill Stakes Day in early October each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.<\/p>\n

It was previously held a week earlier on Epsom Handicap Day but runs at the meeting that is now headlined by the Group 2 $2 million Hill Stakes (1900m).<\/p>\n

Contested over 1200m and offering $300,000 in prize money, the race is run at set weights and is open only to three-year-olds.<\/p>\n

The Roman Consul Stakes winner also earns a ballot exemption into the following autumn’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes<\/a> (1200m) held in the autumn.<\/p>\n

The best horses out of the Roman Consul Stakes may head south to Melbourne for a shot at the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes<\/a> (1200m) down the Flemington straight on VRC Derby Day.<\/p>\n

Brazen Beau (2014) and Switzerland (2024) are the latest young sprinters to complete the Roman Consul Stakes – Coolmore Stud Stakes double<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 2020 Roman Consul Stakes winner Wild Ruler ran a next-up third in the Coolmore Stud Stakes trifecta and won the following year’s Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at The Valley.<\/p>\n

The 2023 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner also came via a lead-up run in the Roman Consul with Ozzmosis improving on his third.<\/p>\n

The Roman Consul Stakes also serves as a potential lead-up into the $20 million The Everest<\/a> (1200m).<\/p>\n

The race is named in honour of former star sprinter from the 1960’s Roman Consul who is best known for a hat-trick of wins in the Chelmsford Stakes (1967-69).<\/p>\n
