    \"Tramway<\/p>\n

    Run over 1,400 metres Tramway Stakes is a Group 2 race taking place at Randwick Racecourse as part of the Chelmsford Stakes Day card in early September each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. <\/span><\/p>\n

    With a $300,000 prize purse as of 2023 it attracts a quality field of middle-distance spring hopefuls tougher Group 1 races including the George Main Stakes (1600m) – now run as the King Charles III Stakes<\/strong><\/a> – and Epsom Handicap<\/a> (1600m) both run over the Randwick mile. Sincero (2011) was the last galloper to complete the Tramway Stakes – George Main Stakes double<\/strong>, while Kolding (2nd in 2020) was the last Tramway graduate to back-up and win the George Main next start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The Tramway Stakes is run at set weights plus penalties with the winner earning an Epsom Handicap ballot exemption<\/strong>.\u00a0Hauraki (2016) was the last horse to win the Tramway Stakes – Epsom Handicap double<\/strong> in a single season.<\/p>\n

    In 2021 Zaaki won the Tramway Stakes as the favourite before heading south to salute in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m). He was third next-up in the Caulfield Stakes and went on to win Flemington’s Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) after being scratched from that year’s Cox Plate field on race morning as the favourite. Zaaki further franked the Tramway form the following autumn winning the $5 million The All-Star Mile<\/a> (1600m).<\/p>\n

    Zaaki returned to salute as the odds-on favourite in the Tramway Stakes before successfully defending his Mackinnon Stakes (VRC Champions Stakes) title.<\/p>\n

    The Tramway Stakes now serves as a key lead-up into the new $1 million 7 Stakes<\/a> (1600m) race held the next month at Randwick on The Shorts Day offering the winner an Epsom Handicap ballot exemption.<\/p>\n

    The 2024 Tramway form was franked with the winner Royal Patronage going on to run third in the $1 million 7 Stakes, Epsom Handicap and $2 million Hill Stakes. He also returned in the autumn of 2025 to win the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes and finish second in that year\u2019s Doncaster Mile quinella.<\/p>\n

    In 2025 Pericles won the race for a second time having also saluted back in 2023.<\/p>\n
