Previously a Group 2 race and known as the Warwick Stakes, the Winx Stakes race has upgraded and moved across to Royal Randwick from it’s former home at Warwick Farm. The race track and grade aren’t the only thing that’ve been upgraded, with the purse doubling in size to $500,000. The Winx Stakes prize money was increased again ahead of 2023 and is now worth $1 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2018 edition of the race was renamed as the Winx Stakes in honour of the iconic Winx who won in both 2016 and 2017 before her hat-trick when taking out the event as the namesake in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winx’s trainer Chris Waller won the race for a sixth time in 2020 with his subsequent Caulfield Cup<\/a> winning mare Verry Elleegant defeating stablemate Star Of The Seas. Verry Elleegant defended her title in 2021, but ran second to Mo’unga, before winning the George Main Stakes (now King Charles III Stakes) next race and the Melbourne Cup<\/a> later that spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The high quality of Winx Stakes winners continued in 2022 with subsequent Cox Plate<\/a> hero Anamoe saluting for the punters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waller added to his Winx Stakes record with a seventh success in 2023 with Fangirl improving on her second to Anamoe the year before, and then trained the 2024 trifecta for his eighth success with Via Sistina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Winx Stakes now serves as a key lead-up into the new $1 million 7 Stakes<\/a> (1600m) race held the next month at Randwick on The Shorts Day offering the winner an Epsom Handicap ballot exemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Via Sistina franked the 2024 Winx Stakes form going on to win a record number of subsequent Group 1 races that season including her historic eight-length victory in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waller won the Winx Stakes for a ninth time in 2025 with the defending champion, Via Sistina, resuming to go back-to-back in the event for her 10th career Group 1. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Via Sistina proved the class of her crop, returning in the spring of 2025 to sweep the Cox Plate\u2013Champions Stakes double<\/strong> before heading into retirement on a high. That Winx Stakes<\/strong> form only strengthened as the season unfolded, with runner\u2011up Aeliana putting together an outstanding campaign of her own \u2014 consistently landing in the placings at the top level and ultimately claiming the Ranvet Stakes\u2013Tancred Stakes double<\/strong> at Rosehill in March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
