    Run over 1100 metres (reduced from 1200m in 2023), the Roma Cup is a Group 3 autumn \/ winter sprint race taking place at Ascot Racecourse in Perth in each year. It was previously run in May before being moved forward to the first Saturday of April in 2023 to run on the same date as Sydney’s Doncaster Mile<\/a> Day program at Randwick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In 2025 it moved one week later and runs in mid-April on the same date as Randwick\u2019s The Championships Day 2 headlined by the $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In 2026, Roma Cup Day moved back to the first Saturday in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With a boosted prize purse of $200,000, the weight-for-age event attracts the best local sprinting talent each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This race itself serves as an excellent lead-up to the Belmont Sprint<\/a> and following that the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) over a mile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Run and won since 1966 plenty of top Perth horses have taken out the Roma Cup including Luckygray (2012, 2015) and Rock Magic (2017, 2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Roma Cup now also serves as a likely lead-up for sprinters in the all-new slot race, the $5 million The Quokka<\/a> (1200m), run at Ascot in mid-April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 2023 Roma Cup winner Amelia’s Jewel went on to run second in the inaugural The Quokka race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Amelia’s Jewel returned to run second as the beaten favourite in the 2024 Roma Cup ahead of a second shot at The Quokka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 2024 Roma Cup form was subsequently franked with Oscar\u2019s Fortune going on to run third in that year\u2019s The Quokka, while Amelia\u2019s Jewel ran second in both races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 2025 Roma Cup proved a serious form reference, producing that year\u2019s The Quokka winner after runner\u2011up Jokers Grin \u2014 first past the post before losing on protest \u2014 bounced back to score a stunning 20\/1 upset in the $5 million feature. Generosity further stamped the form by finishing third in both races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
