    Wootton Verni<\/strong>\u00a0($3.80F) broke a 570-day drought to claim his first Australian win in the\u00a02025 Coongy Cup results<\/strong>\u00a0at Caulfield, delivering a breakthrough for trainer Chris Waller. The French-bred son of Wootton Bassett, previously a Group 3 winner in Europe, had gone winless in five local starts but was well-supported following a strong fourth at Sandown. Ridden by Damian Lane, Wootton Verni overcame mid-race quirks and surged through a gap in the straight to hold off outsider Casino Seventeen and Future History, stamping himself as a genuine staying prospect.<\/p>\n\n

    The Coongy Cup – formerly known as the Coongy Handicap<\/strong> – is a 2000m handicap race run and won at Caulfield Racecourse on the Wednesday before the Caulfield Cup each October.<\/p>\n

    The Group 3 event has been run and won since 1898 and offers $240,000 in prize money.<\/p>\n

    It has been held over varying distances between 2000m and 2400m over the years and gained its current Group 3 status in 1978.<\/p>\n

    The Coongy Cup winner is also exempt from ballot from the Group 1 $5 million Caufield Cup<\/a> (2400m) held back at the track just three days later.<\/p>\n

    While no horse has completed the double in recent years, Shocking did improve on a Coongy Cup 2nd in 2009 to continue on and win both the Lexus Stakes and Melbourne Cup<\/a> that spring.<\/p>\n

    The Coongy Cup form was franked in 2021 with the winning mare Duais going on to complete the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) – Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) double in the autumn of 2022.<\/p>\n
