    Libertad<\/strong>\u00a0($21) produced one of the biggest shocks of the Pinnacles Carnival when he narrowly headed the\u00a02025 Winterbottom Stakes results at Ascot<\/strong> on Saturday. Sent out at long odds, the five-year-old Russian Revolution entire trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald and ridden by Jamie Mott surged late to deny hot favourite Overpass a historic third consecutive victory in the race.<\/p>\n

    Mott tracked Overpass throughout and seized the inside run when the favourite rolled off the fence on the home turn, driving Libertad to the front in a thrilling head-to-head battle. The nose margin made for one of the most dramatic Winterbottom finishes in recent memory, with Rey Magnerio finishing third just half a length away.<\/p>\n

    The victory delivered Libertad his first Group 1 success, boosted his profile as a stallion prospect, and gave Mott a career highlight with his fourth Group 1 win, while simultaneously ending Overpass\u2019s bid for a rare three-peat in Western Australia\u2019s premier sprint.<\/p>\n\n

    \"Winterbottom<\/p>\n

    The Winterbottom Stakes is the premier sprint race held in WA over the Perth Summer Racing Carnival and is the second Group 1 of the festival. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Taking place annually in late November, the $1.5 million event is conducted over 1200m at Ascot Racecourse and is a weight-for-age race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Good Winterbottom Stakes lead-up races including the Prince of Wales Stakes (1200m) and the Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) run in the weeks prior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Increasingly interstate raiders are making their way west for the Winterbottom Stakes and from 2017-19 all three winners of the Group 1 came off a Melbourne lead-up race.<\/p>\n

    Paulele (Group 1 Champions Sprint 11th at Flemington in 2022) and Overpass (Gorup 1 Champions Sprint 8th at Flemington in 2024) are the latest Winterbottom Stakes winners to come via a Victorian race.<\/p>\n

    Perth’s Group 3 $1.5 million The Gold Rush<\/a> (1400m), held for the first time in 2022, makes a nice next-up option for Winterbottom Stakes graduates. In 2022 Kissonallforcheeks ran second in both events.<\/p>\n

    The 2023 Winterbottom Stakes winner Overpass won that year’s The Quokka<\/a> and successfully defended his title in that $4 million buy in race the following April in 2024. Overpass would also defend his title and win the 2024 Winterbottom Stakes.<\/p>\n

    Overpass attempted a historic three-peat in 2025 only to go down a nose as the beaten favourite in an upset behind 20\/1 winner Libertad.<\/p>\n
