Another Saturday means yet another huge day of NBA action. There are 7 enticing games on tonight’s slate, highlighted by the defending champion Warriors traveling to the Garden to take on the Knicks. With plenty of value on the board, let’s take a look at our 3 best bets and daily multi.
New York Knicks
The 1-4 Knicks enter this home primetime matchup off the back of 4 straight losses. The worst of these occurred on Thursday, with an embarrassing 23-point road loss to the Miami Heat. It was a dreadful performance from the Knicks starting lineup, registering just 40 points between them on the evening. Shooting Guard Tim Hardaway Jr has been a bright spot so far, averaging 24.4 points and shooting 38% from 3. The Knicks were expected to have a bad defence this year, a prediction which has held true through the first 5 games. Allowing just under 110 points per contest, things don’t get easy as the reigning champs head to town.
Golden State Warriors
The 4-1 Warriors travel to New York in the first game of their East Coast road trip, after consecutive 20+ point home wins over the Suns and Wizards. Point Guard Stephen Curry stole the show with 51 points, including 11 3’s and a flawless display from the free-throw line. His performance was so special that no-one is even talking about Kevin Durant dropping an incredibly efficient 30 points, 8 boards and 7 assists. As is usually the case when the champs come to New York, I’m expecting a high-energy game filled with some big plays from the Warriors stars.
Prediction: Warriors -6.5 1st Half
The Warriors starting lineup has such an immense talent advantage over the Knicks that I can see them getting off to a huge start here. They’ve had dominant performances in their past two first quarters and I expect that trend to continue. In their only trip to New York this season, I doubt a lack of energy will be a problem for Golden State here.
New Orleans Pelicans
The 3-0 Pelicans continue their homestand after a strong win over the Clippers on Wednesday. Star big man Anthony Davis is off to an incredible start to the season, averaging 30 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks so far. Frontcourt mate Nikola Mirotic has also started strongly, averaging 28 points and 10 boards on 48% shooting from 3. Free Agent acquisition Julius Randle is looking like an early contender for sixth man of the year, averaging 18 points and 9 boards in just 23 minutes per game. New Point Guard Elfrid Payton has also ably filled the hole left by Rajon Rondo, averaging an efficient 13,7 and 7 so far.
Brooklyn Nets
The 2-2 Nets travel to New Orleans fresh off an encouraging 16-point road win over Cleveland. Each member of their starting lineup scored in double figures in what was a very complete display. Shooting Guard Caris LeVert has emerged as a leader on this team, averaging 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists on just under 60% shooting so far. Second-year Center Jarrett Allen has also proven a worthy starter, whilst high-profile Point Guard D’Angelo Russell looks to rehab his value in a contract year. I think this Nets team is underrated by the general public, but they’ll likely struggle against a firing Pelicans side here.
Prediction: Under 237.5 Points
This total is way too high for me. Nets games have comfortably gone under this total in 3 of 4 so far, a trend which I expect to continue here. Brooklyn plays a tough and gritty style of basketball, lacking the outside shooting to put up these large totals. A reasonable facsimile is their recent game against the Clippers, which ended on 225 points. I expect a similar total here in what is my best bet of the evening.
Sacramento Kings
The 2-3 Kings have surprised many this season with their energetic and competitive brand of basketball. After wins over the Thunder and Grizzlies in 2 of their past 3, Sacramento will look to make it 3 in 4 as they play host to Washington. Second-year Point Guard De’Aaron Fox has stood out so far, averaging 17.6 points, 6.6 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game. Rookie big man Marvin Bagley has also impressed off the bench, averaging 14 points and 7 boards, shooting 58% from the field in the process. Continued strong play from these youngsters is really all that Kings fans can ask for this year.
Washington Wizards
The 1-3 Wizards travel to Sacramento in desperate need of a win. They followed up an impressive road win in Portland by giving up 144 in a crushing loss to the Champs last time out. Shooting Guard Bradley Beal has started the season very strongly, averaging 25 points from the field and shooting over 45% from 3. Washington will need him fit and firing to beat the upstart Kings here. John Wall has also started the season strongly in his return from injury, with averages of 20 points and 7.5 assists through his first 4.
Prediction: Under 237.5 Points
With some of the huge totals to start the season, the bookies have started to over adjust with totals that are just too high. With two relatively inconsistent offences featuring in this one, I’m fairly confident in this under bet. I expect this to be a hard fought and competitive game that ends somewhere between 220 and 230 points.
I’m very confident in-home wins here for the Raptors and Pelicans, whilst adding the Wizards really beefs up this price. After emerging as strong contenders in their respective conferences, I expect Toronto and New Orleans to continue their unbeaten starts. Similarly, I expect the Wizards to come out strong here to avoid going 1-4 on their tough West Coast road trip. At even money, I think this bet represents strong value.
