New York Mets
The Mets enter this one in very solid form, moving to 5-1 after another win over the Marlins yesterday. Jacob deGrom continued his strong recent pitching form, allowing 0 earned through 6 innings. Offensively, the likes of Robinson Cano and Ahmed Rosario have been leading the way for another solid unit.
Washington Nationals
Things haven’t been great in Washington so far, but they did manage a huge 9-8 victory over Philly yesterday. This was despite a poor performance from pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who was pulled after allowing 4 runs in 4 innings. The offense more than made up for it however, with Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto both managing 3 hits.
Prediction: Nationals $2.15
I expect yesterday’s huge win to galvanize this Nationals side going forward. The offence hasn’t been the problem of late and should continue roaring here. With ace Stephen Strasbourg on the mound, I’ll happily take the underdog here.
Pittsburgh Pirates
After tying their opening series in Cincinnati, these sides will now do Battle in Pittsburgh for the next four nights. Yesterday was another solid outing at home for the Pirates against St Louis, capped off by an impressive pitching display from Jameson Taillon. Combine that with the strong hitting of Josh Bell and Adam Frazier and you’ve got a dangerous playoff contender.
Cincinnati Reds
The Reds moved to a dismal 1-4 this season after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Milwaukee yesterday. This wasted a very impressive pitching display from Juan Castillo, who allowed just 1 run through 7 innings. The offence was definitely the main culprit for the loss, managing a measly 3 hits all afternoon.
Prediction: Pirates $1.80
The Reds have struggled offensively of late and I don’t see that really changing against Jordan Lyles. The Pirates have a very strong home field advantage to go along with an explosive offence. At $1.80, I think the value is on the home side here.
Atlanta Braves
Things didn’t get off to the best of starts for Atlanta this season but they did manage a strong 8-0 win in their series opener with the Cubs. The Sean Newcomb-led pitching staff was on fire, allowing no runs all afternoon. Ozhaino Albies led the way with 3 hits offensively and was capably supported by 2 RBI from Brian McCann.
Chicago Cubs
On the flipside, things couldn’t have started much worse for the Cubs. After losing their season series to Texas, they also suffered an embarrassing opening loss to these same Braves. On the bright side, they did still manage a decent 9 hits offensively, including 2 a piece for David Bote and Mark Zagunis.
Prediction: Braves $1.85
This is definitely a contrarian pick but I fancy Atlanta at home in this one. I think they’re finding an offensive groove and can exploit Yu Darvish here. With the solid Mike Fried on the mound, I’ll take Atlanta at the reasonable $1.85 price.
