Pakistan will carry winning form and huge confidence into tonight’s meeting with Sri Lanka in Bristol.

A first-up loss to the West Indies was well and truly accounted for when Pakistan came out and beat host nation and tournament favourites England. The result was set up with the bat; big performances from the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez virtually took the game away from England, while several players mustered quality performances and wickets with the ball.

Sri Lanka were flogged by New Zealand but beat Afghanistan on Duckworth Lewis last time out, but they’d need to improve tenfold to beat Pakistan.

Australia vs West Indies

We’re set for an outstanding contest when Australia step out opposite the West Indies at Trent Bridge tonight. Both nations recorded dominant first-up wins and while betting suggests that it will be all one-way traffic in Australia’s favour tonight, I’m not so sure.

As anticipated, the Aussies recorded a comfortable win over Afghanistan first-up and they’ll have taken plenty of benefit from the hit-out. David Warner was outstanding with the bat and delivered on our top runscorer tip, so I’m more than happy to reload with him.

The West Indies are clearly at their best in the limited overs formats these days and they’ll be quietly confident of taking a big scalp today. Their win over Pakistan was massive and that result has since been franked, with that opposition defeating England on Monday night.

This looked like being one of the better games of the pool stage but given South Africa’s two lacklustre performances so far, it now looks like another pretty good opportunity for India to win.

A loss to the host nation in the tournament opener is probably fair enough, but the Proteas have since dropped the basket against minnows Bangladesh and it’s tough imagining them improving enough to compete with one of the world’s better sides.

This is India’s first match at the 2019 World Cup and I’m expecting players like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah to send a message to the rest of the competition.

Bangladesh vs New Zealand

The Kiwis were outstanding first-up but will need to produce a similar performance to assure themselves victory over a decent Bangladesh side.

As anticipated, New Zealand faced little resistance from Sri Lanka and bowled the subcontinent nation out for a measly 136; reaching the figure in just over 16 overs and without the loss of a wicket. Matt Henry was the main destroyer with the ball and claimed Man of the Match honours, but I’m confident that Trent Boult is still the one to be with in the top wicket taking market.

Bangladesh pulled off the upset of the tournament so far when they saw off the second-up South Africa and they will be full of confidence when they step out opposite the Blackcaps. They will need to improve, however, to contain what is clearly a better side.

Not a lot in this one from a neutral spectator’s perspective but given the performances mustered by these two nations first-up, it’ll probably be a decent contest. Wins are vital for the smaller nations wherever they can get them, and both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will be confident of getting one here.

Sri Lanka were flogged by New Zealand first-up, while Afghanistan stood little hope against Australia and understandably, walked away pretty comfortable losers. I think that the former’s experience will prove slightly too good here and they are worthy of consideration at $1.80.

England recorded a pretty easy win over South Africa first-up, but that form hasn’t really been franked as the Proteas have since been beaten by the lowly Bangladesh. Regardless, this looks another very winnable game for them and the $1.25 that is on offer in head-to-head betting looks to be about the right price.

Pakistan were easily bowled out by the West Indies first-up and undoubtedly face a tougher task in the form of the host nation.

It wasn’t the start that we’d hoped for with South Africa, but their gallant performance and the improvement that is sure to have been taken from the effort would see them beating Bangladesh tonight.

This is Bangladesh’s first appearance at the 2019 Cricket World Cup and it really looks like being a baptism of fire. They have improved tenfold since gaining Test status, but they face little hope in overcoming one of the world’s best cricketing nations, who have enjoyed excellent form leading into the tournament.

I think that New Zealand are a serious shout of winning this World Cup and the $9 on offer for them to do so is major overs.

They will open their campaign against Sri Lanka at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff and should be recording the first win of their campaign. Sri Lanka are in a rebuilding phase and simply do not have the firepower and spin capabilities that they once boasted, and it looks like being a baptism of fire for them when they stop out opposite the Black Caps.

The Aussies will launch their campaign against minnows Afghanistan in Bristol tonight and they should be walking away comfortable victors. There is something seriously wrong if they don’t.

I’m expecting a big tournament from both David Warner and Steve Smith, but I think that the former in particularly really needs to put his best foot forward from the outset and I’m keen to take the $4 that is on offer for him to top score for the Aussies. Given he’s an opener, he’ll be given every opportunity to notch a big one.

The swinging conditions in England tend to suit Mitchell Starc and he looks over the odds to take the most wickets for Australia at $3.50.

An intriguing match will see the big hitting West Indies take on Pakistan, in what could prove to be one of the tighter contests of the pool stage. Both nations opened at odds of $15 to win the World Cup and while that is probably a bit of a dream, I think that both are capable of competitive tournaments.

I simply cannot look past the Windies’ massive firepower and if they bat first and post a big score, it’s tough imagining Pakistan running them down. Pakistan won just one of their World Cup warm up matches and may need this hit-out.

The 2019 Cricket World Cup has arrived, and the host nation will square off with the ever-dangerous South Africa at The Oval.

England have opened the tournament as resounding favourites to lift the World Cup for the first time, but there is no doubt that this is a difficult first-up prospect and they are under the odds to beat South Africa at $1.44. The Proteas; value as always at $2.75.

It might seem bizarre, but I’m eager to take the price for South Africa to win as outsiders first-up. Regardless of England’s form leading into the tournament, there is no doubt that they will be feeling the weight of a nation and they typically haven’t coped well with that previously.

2019 Cricket World Cup Preview

The 2019 Cricket World Cup will officially get underway in England from Thursday night, Australian time.

Everything that I have read about England in the lead up to this World Cup suggests that they are in ‘scary’ form, but everything that I have seen of England during my entire existence suggests that they are also the most likely to bottle their chances of winning, of any nation appearing in the tournament.

England have opened the $2.85 favourites in 2019 World Cup betting and given I am happy to bet around them, there’s plenty of value to be found.

To be fair, England have found decent form of late and they’ve recorded some impressive results. This is in their home country and that should only play to their strengths, but I feel like the Barmy Army might spend more of their time heaping it on Steve Smith and David Warner than they will cheering for their own team. They’ve also never won a cricket World Cup and boy must that weigh a lot across the shoulders. They have won 41 of their 72 matches at the Cricket World Cup so far.

India always boast a quality squad that is rich with batting prowess and world-class spinners, but rarely do they perform to a high standard away from the roads that the subcontinent groundsmen tend to serve up. Virat Kohli is undoubtedly key to India’s chances, as he always is, and a big tournament from the captain could very well convert into a trophy. They have won 46 of their 75 matches at the Cricket World Cup so far and have won the tournament twice.

Smith and Warner are back in the fold and Australia appears on the third line of betting. I hate to say it, but I think that they are a little bit under the odds to win the 2019 Cricket World Cup at $5. Even when the chips are down, Australia tends to field at least a competitive side and for the most part, that still leaves us firmly entrenched within the best four of five nations in the world. If Australia can do enough to get through to the semi-finals, they are in with a chance. They have won 62 of their 84 matches at the Cricket World Cup so far and have won the tournament five times.

New Zealand ($9)

The Black Caps made the final in Australia four years ago and they genuinely look the value in the market to be crowned 2019 World Cup winners at $9. The English conditions will suit their squad right down to the ground and I’m more than happy to tip Trent Boult as the tournament’s leading wicket taker. The bloke gets swing when nothing is doing, and I can just picture the movement he’s going to get on these decks. Throw in your Kane Williamsons, Colin de Grandhommes and you’ve got a genuine shot at a very backable price. They have won 48 of their 79 matches at the Cricket World Cup so far.

South Africa ($13)

Incredible to see a nation of South Africa’s might perched at Cricket World Cup winner odds of $13 and they are another side that simply cannot be written off. They’ve won six of their last seven ODI series’ and boast some of the world’s best players. I simply cannot wait to see evergreen veteran Dale Steyn rip in. They do face a bit of a task in the form of England first-up, but it would not be surprising to see them lining up on the final day of the tournament. They have won 35 of their 55 matches at the Cricket World Cup so far.

Everyone Else

At one stage, nations like Pakistan ($15), the West Indies ($17) and Sri Lanka ($67) loomed as live chances of winning the Cricket World Cup, but it would surely take a monumental effort to even go close in 2019. Bangladesh ($67) and Afghanistan ($81) complete the 2019 World Cup field.
