The Brisbane Winter Carnival isn’t quite over yet but this weekend we’ll turn our attention to Ipswich as they host their biggest race meeting of the year.
Headlining the day is the time honoured Ipswich Cup and it is one three black type races to feature on the card.
The Listed Eye Liner and Gai Watehouse Stakes will also be run and won.
I’ve had a good look at all nine races across the day and have provided my thoughts and selections below.
Race 1: (11:43pm AEST) GREAT NORTHERN IPSWICH INCENTIVE FINAL CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 4 Southern Charm
Southern Charm has been racing well and drops back in grade.
A winner over this course and distance three runs back, she then stepped out to 1350m in a 3YO Plate on Doomben 10,000 Day but was always wide and failed to finish off.
Last start, back to 1200m in the Listed QLD Day Stakes, she was again wide throughout but stuck on gamely to hold fourth.
Formerly with the Waterhouse / Bott team, she’s settled in nicely since joining the Munce yard and she looks ideally placed here.
Race 2: (12:18pm AEST) BISHOPP BM78 HANDICAP 1666M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 11 Heman
Heman has been the runner up in two runs back this preparation and looks ready to peak.
Resuming over 1200m at Doomben, he settled back second last and powered home down the outside to get within half of the length of the stablemate Hermanita, who led throughout.
Out to 1350m there last time, he again got back and worked home strongly behind the talented Tuff Tu Mus.
The son of I Am Invincible has only had one start over the mile, where he finished second in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes, so he looks well suited with the rise in trip and the low draw should see him settle within striking distance under Justin Huxtable.
Race 3: (12:53pm AEST) CHANNEL SEVEN WNITER PROVINCIAL STAYES FINAL BM78 HANDICAP 2500M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 2 Bestower
Bestower is proving frustrating for both connections and punters but I’m keen to stick with her here as she steps out over this trip.
A daughter of Contributor, she’s proven herself a very capable mare on her day but her racing manners do let her down.
She was unlucky not to have to won at Gold Coast on Hollindale Stakes Day and at her following outing, she raced out of her comfort zone, up on speed, and failed to finish off.
Last time, she got clear and charged home late as she looked to have the winner covered but just laid in and cost herself.
The way she finds the line suggests the rise in distance will suit and Andrew Mallyon knows her well.
Race 4: (1:28pm AEST) RAY WHITE IPSWICH BM80 HANDICAP 1100M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 11 Sunset Dreaming
Sunset Dreaming steps out for new trainer Tony Gollan.
Formally prepared in Victoria by the McEvoy Team, the mare has put together a handy record and boasts solid form around her.
Her most recent outing was back in April, where she contested a BM70 on Bendigo Gold Rush Day and she didn’t have much luck at all in the run.
Tucked away on the fence, she was held up for much off the straight and flashed late once clear.
She races well fresh and looks ready to go off a recent Deagon trial.
Angela Jones will do the steering and if she can slot in and find cover, she’s sure to be strong late.
Race 5: (2:03pm AEST) RIVER 949FM BUNDAMBA PLATE CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1350M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 1 Bettcha The Crown
Bettcha The Crown has been scratched from the Eyeliner in favour is this race and I think the team have made the right call.
The Casino Prince gelding comes here in peak order with the two runs under his belt and he is unbeaten in three third up appearances.
He didn’t have a lot of room late when resuming at Doomben but he closed off nicely there last time to finish third.
A very capable galloper in his day, this looks a winnable race for him and he gets in nicely with Corey Sutherland’s 3kg claim.
Race 6: (2:38pm AEST) SCHWEPPES T L COONEY 3YO SW 1350M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 1 Stay Focused
Stay Focused has the job ahead from the wide draw but I think he has the class to overcome it.
The Cosmic Force gelding failed to finish off last start in the Fred Best but was found to have pulled up suffering with heat stress, so I’m happy to be with him.
He brings some of the strongest formlines into this event, and he was dominant winner of the Listed Nitsche Stakes at Morphettville before making his way to Queensland.
He strips fitter from that latest outing, gets in well under the set weights conditions and with even luck off the wide gate, I think he’ll be right in this.
Race 7: (3:17pm AEST) TAB IPSWICH CUP LISTED 2150M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 4 Osmose
Osmose has been solid through the line in two runs back this campaign and looks ready to peak as she steps out to this trip.
Prepared by the Waterhouse / Bott team, the former French galloper has only won the three races but has competed at stakes level for much of her career and holds solid form against quality opposition.
She’s yet to step out to this trip bit was victorious in the Epona Stakes over 1900m and did finish only a head away in second in the Matriarch over 2000m behind Deny Knowledge.
She draws to get the right run under Regan Bayliss and I think she’ll prove too classy for them.
Race 8: (3:53pm AEST) BARRIER REEF POOLS EYE LINER STAKES LISTED 1350M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 2 Warnie
Warnie has been terrific in both runs back this time in and he looks beautifully placed here third up.
Gelded during his break, the Ciaron Maher trained four year old kicked off in the Takeover Target where he travelled well in the second half of the field and charged home late in restricted room to claim fourth, beaten only a long neck.
Last start, he was unlucky in the Group 2 Moreton Cup as he found himself back at the tail off a slow start and with it all to do at the top of the straight, he charged home late into third.
The UK import has continued to progress well since his arrival in Australian the ultimate gear change looks to have had the desired effect.
The rise to 1350m looks ideal and he draws to get a cosy run in transit.
Race 9: (4:30pm AEST) GORDON'S GIN GAI WATERHOUSE CLASSIC LISTED F&M 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 3 Kazou
Kazou was never in the hunt when resuming in the Listed Bob Charley Stakes at Randwick but she strips fitter for the run and will certainly appreciate stepping out over that bit further.
Taken back off the wide gate, she was a long way off them and covered plenty of ground but still finished off strongly.
She’s worked through her grades nicely and I think a stakes win is imminent for this daughter of Zoustar.
She’s won five from seven over the 1200m and looks placed to add to that tally.
