No. 3 Captain Cat

J: Nathan Punch (59.5kg) T: Brett Conlon

CAPTAIN CAT (3) returns from a lengthy spell after holding his own across three starts during his maiden campaign.

He struck similar wet conditions on debut at Geelong last year on his way to finishing second, and was strong to the line again out over further at Sale when beaten under half a length.

The son of Adelaide hasn’t done a great deal at the jump outs, but likely to get back and run on, he looks the pick in a race that lacks depth.

Moe: Race 5 (2:30pm)

Each Way

No. 17 Auckland

J: Unknown (61.5kg) T: Simone Walker

Interesting setup here for AUCKLAND (17), who gets out to his preferred trip where he’s won twice in the past.

Simone Walker’s gelding is also down to race at Werribee on Friday, but he should be suited here after bolting in late to run a place over 1000m at Mornington last time out.

A wet track suits, and although the gate complicates things, he looks ready to peak third-up.

Moe: Race 7 (3:30pm)

No. 4 Makdane

J: Bailey Kinninmont (58.5kg) T: Michael Kent

MAKDANE (4) is likely to find this easier fourth-up after weakening badly in a BM64 at Pakenham last start.

A wide ride without cover cost him big time that day, but this does present as a more winnable assignment from a soft gate with the 1.5kg claim put to good use.

He’s done some nice racing with wet conditions under foot, and with the run over the mile to his name now, he should be a big improver.
