Caulfield Tips & Preview – Saturday, May 10
War Machine (yellow cap) showed his class when third in the Silver Eagle and is ready to fire second-up.

Caulfield Tips & Preview – Saturday, May 10

Looking for Caulfield tips this Saturday? You’ve come to the right place!

Nine races are set for decision on what should be a near perfect day for racing on a Good 4 surface.

Caulfield is on the quick back-up following last Saturday’s meeting which sees the rail move out to the 4m position.

My best bet comes up in the middle of the card and is a lightly raced filly that I think can progress to black-type victories.

I’ve put in the hard work, so you don’t have to and have provided my Caulfield tips and a preview of each race.

Race 1 (12:10PM AEST): 2YO Open Handicap (1100 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 8 Prince Tycoon

J: Daniel Moor (55.5kg) T: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young

Prince Tycoon (8) was scratched from a winnable race on The Heath track Wednesday in preference of making his debut here.

The Busuttin & Young-trained Written Tycoon colt has looked slick in winning both his Cranbourne jump outs in slick time.

In his first jump out he settled off the speed before finding the line powerfully to win comfortably.

He followed that up by showing excellent speed to lead all the way in his most recent piece of work.

He’s drawn perfectly for Daniel Moor who should be able to either lead or settle close and kick our Caulfield tips off with a win.

Race 2 (12:40PM AEST): Benchmark 84 Handicap (2400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 1 Ziryab

J: Jaylah Kennedy (60.5kg) T: Ciaron Maher

Ziryab (1) will appreciate returning to a Good track after trying hard last start in the Listed Warrnambool Cup where he finished 1.9 lengths third.

The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding loves dry tracks, having won four of nine races on it including two starts back when leading all the way to easily win the Terang Cup.

While he’s rising in weight, he gets 2kg relief for Jaylah Kennedy’s claim and he’s dropping significantly in class.

From barrier 1, Kennedy should give him the run of the race.

Race 3 (1:15PM AEST): Benchmark 78 Handicap (2000 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 9 Freight Train

J: Jye McNeil (57kg) T: Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Freight Train (9) returned in great order three starts ago over 1600m on the Hillside track where he was nudged out late to finish a head third.

The Price & Kent Jnr-trained gelding raced a bit flat second-up at Bendigo when blinkers were replaced by winkers but he bounced back last start.

He looked to have plenty to give at Flemington but just couldn’t get clear in the straight until the race was nearly over, at which point he ran strongly through the line to finish two lengths fifth.

He’ll appreciate the rise to 2000m and maps to get a great run for Jye McNeil.

Best of the day

Race 4 (1:50PM AEST): 3YO Fillies Benchmark 70 Handicap (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 6 Madiyya

J: Luke Currie (57kg) T: Ben, Will & Jd Hayes

Madiyya (6) caught the eye when storming home from the back to finish just under a length second when debuting over 1200m at Pakenham.

The Team Hayes-trained Super Seth filly gave a clear demonstration of her talent last start when letting down powerfully to win by 3.5 lengths hands and heels over 1400m at Sale.

She’ll strip fitter third-up and looks to have an abundance of upside.

She maps to stalk a decent speed and is one of the best Caulfield tips I can give.

Race 5 (2:25PM AEST): Fillies & Mares Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 8 Sirius Statement

J: Jamie Mott (58kg) T: Gavin Bedggood

Sirius Statement (8) took on a mile for just the second time in her career last start at Mornington and handled it beautifully, running on strongly to win by 1.3 lengths.

The Gavin Bedggood-trained mare won’t mind the drop back to 1400m given she’s won three of five starts over the journey.

She was particularly impressive two starts ago over 1400m at “The ‘Ham” where she produced a powerful finishing burst to put her rivals away and dash clear to win by two lengths with third a further 2.8 lengths away.

Jamie Mott has developed a great partnership with her and should give her every chance from the nice draw.

Race 6 (3:00PM AEST): 3YO Open Handicap (1600 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 11 Mary Eliza

J: Luke Cartwright (54kg) T: Peter G Moody & Katherine Coleman

Mary Eliza (11) was luckless when resuming last start in the Mornington Guineas.

The Moody & Coleman-trained daughter of Super Seth settled back and looked to have plenty to offer but couldn’t find a clear path, going to the line untested for a 4.1 length seventh.

She’ll strip fitter and won her only previous second-up race which was over 1500m at Mornington last preparation.

With Luke Cartwright’s 3kg claim, she’ll carry just 51kg.

Race 7 (3:40PM AEST): Benchmark 84 Handicap (1600 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 11 Saban

J: Luke Cartwright (54.5kg) T: Peter G Moody & Katherine Coleman

Saban (11) caught the eye when resuming over 1400m at Flemington last start.

In a similar scenario to my Caulfield tip in the previous race Mary Eliza, the Moody & Coleman-trained gelding settled back before not having the clearest of paths and picking up strongly in the last furlong to finish 3.1 lengths fifth.

He’ll have come on since that run and will carry just 51kg thanks to Luke Cartwright’s claim.

They should roll along in front which will aid his cause.

Race 8 (4:15PM AEST): Benchmark 100 Handicap (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 8 War Machine

J: Jamie Mott (58kg) T: Ben, Will & Jd Hayes

War Machine (8) returned in great order last start in the Listed Hareeba Stakes at Mornington where he stormed home to miss the win by a nose.

The Glen Thompson-trained gelding will strip fitter and has run well second-up in the past which includes a five-length win at Cranbourne.

However, he showed his true potential and class last preparation when second-up in the G3 Silver Eagle where he finished just over a half-length third.

He’s drawn a touch sticky but if he can get some cover for Jamie Mott then he should be able to charge home over the top of them.

Race 9 (4:50PM AEST): Benchmark 84 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 10 Pivot City

J: Jamie Mott (57kg) T: Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Pivot City (10) let down powerfully over 1200m at Flemington to win by a nose first-up.

The Price & Kent Jnr-trained gelding then got too far back after drawing wide at The Valley but caught the eye circling the field and charging home against the pattern of the day to finish a length second.

He produced another great run last start over 1400m at Bendigo where flew home after being held up at the 300m to finish just over half a length third.

He’s at peak fitness now and draws to get a great run for Jamie Mott.
