2025 Dark Jewel Classic Raceday Tips & Preview

Dark Jewel Classic Day will round out this year’s Scone Cup Carnival and with ten races across the day, it’s set to be a big one!

Capacity fields will assemble in nine of the ten events, and we’ve done the hard work for you.

You can find my detailed selections below, including those on the day’s feature race the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic, and there’s a few at juicy odds.

Race 1: ( 11:05am AEST) SELECT EVENTS MIDWAY HANDICAP BM72 1700M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 5 Jumeirah Beach

J: Braith Nock (59.5kg) T: Jason Deamer

Jumeirah Beach is shooting for three straight wins and looks well placed to get it done.

The Pride of Dubai gelding had no luck at Rosehill prior to his trip to Brisbane, where he proved far too good over the mile at Doomben.

His latest win was over 1500m at Hawkesbury and there was plenty of merit in the performance as she struck trouble in the early part of the straight but charged through late to get his nose down where it counted.

He’s fit, he’s racing in top form, and he’ll certainly relish the rise in trip.

Braith Nock strays aboard, he’ll rake 2gs off and the low draw will see him enjoy a cosy run throughout.

Race 2: (11:40am AEST) TAB HIGHWAY CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 10 Due Calzini

J: Jay Ford (55.5kg) T: Danielle Seib

Due Calzini comes off a strong performance to finish second in the Wagga Guineas and he presents here at peak fitness.

He’s only won the one race but has shown talent and has contested much stronger races than this.

The D’Argento gelding recorded his maiden win in dominant fashion at Goulburn and connections thought enough of him to send him north to Queensland to contest the Listed Phoenix Stakes.

Sent for a break after he failed to threaten, he returned in good order and subsequently took his place in both the Gloaming and Spring Championship Stakes.

He looks well suited in this class of race and has been placed in both runs over the mile.

Jay Ford stays aboard and from the wide draw, he’ll get back and be doing his best work late.

Race 3: (12:15pm AEST) YARRAMAN PARK WOODLANDS STAKES 2YO FILLIES LISTED 1100M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 2 Akaysha

J: Tom Sherry (57.5kg) T: Peter Snowden

Akaysha has just had the two starts and she looks to have a bright future.

A winner on debut over 1000m at Newcastle, she looked very professional and gave a good kick late to get the better of last week’s impressive Group 3 Ken Russell winner, Beadman.

A daughter of Capitalist, she was very good again last time over the 1100m at Randwick, hitting the lead 100m out but was just collared late.

The form around her is holding up well and with a bit of luck off the wide draw, I think she’ll be hard to beat.

Race 4: (12:50pm AEST) LION 3&4YO BM72 HANDICAP 1300M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 5 Oh Diamond Lil

J: Kerrin McEvoy (59kg) T: David Pfieffer

Oh Diamond Lil resumes, and she looks ready to fire following two dominant trial wins.

The daughter of So You Think has continued to improve, and picking up three wins from just five starts last preparation with the form around her holding up very nicely.

Only lightly raced, she’s just getting started and I think she’s in for a big campaign.

The 1300m kick of looks ideal and she’ll be able to take up the running from the inside drawn and give them something to chase.

Race 5: (1:25pm AEST) MUSWELLBROOK FORD BM78 HANDICAP 1700M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 5 Quantum Cat

J: Reece Jones (59.5kg) T: Chris Waller

I was on Quantum Cat last start when he went down by the narrowest of margins and I’m sticking solid with him here.

The American bred UK import recorded three wins from five starts before making his way down under and whilst he’s yet to salute here, he has raced consistently, filling the placings on a number of occasions.

He had no luck when resuming at Warwick Farm and over 1800m at Hawkesbury last time, he hit the strongly and only just missed but did a post a three-length margin back to third.

He’s fit, nearing a win and any give in the track will only enhance his chances.

Race 6: (2:00pm AEST) GRO EVENTS BM78 HANDICAP 1100M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 5 Gumdrops

J: Kerrin McEvoy (60kg) T: Chris Waller

Gumdrops will kick off for the new stable.

Now under the care of Chris Waller, the Written Tycoon mare races well fresh and she’s not lacking it terms of class.

She recorded her first stakes win when taking out the Listed Crockett Stakes just her third race start and following a break, she returned in top order to take out the Group 3 Typhoon Tracey Stakes at her second up appearance.

Luckless when resuming last campaign, she then pulled up with EIPH at her following outing.

She comes here off two pleasing trials and should find this easier than what she’s previously contested.

Race 7: (2:35pm AEST) COOLMORE DENISE'S JOY STAKES 3YO FILLIES LISTED 1100M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Soft Love

J: Harry Coffey (56.5kg) T: Matt Laurie

Soft Love comes off a six week freshen up as she looks to maintain an unbeaten record.

A winner of three from three, the Matt Laurie trained filly was simply brilliant when saluting at Caulfield at her most recent outing.

Settling at the tail of the field she showed a powerful turn of foot to storm past them in the straight and extent away to score by just under two lengths.

The form around her in solid and she looks to have a bright future ahead.

She found the line well in a recent Rosehill trial and she’ll enjoy getting out onto the big Scone track.

Race 8: (3:10pm AEST) EMIRATES PARK KIDS FOUNDATION ORTENSIA STAKES LISTED 1100M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 4 Contemporary

J: Chad Schofield (55.5kg) T: James Cummings

Contemporary returns to the races.

The son of Exceed And Excel is never far away from the action and boasts solid form around him.

A winner over this course and distance two years ago, he’s since worked his way through the grades and a stakes win looks imminent.

He races very well fresh, he’s got a great record over the 1100m, and he handles all conditions.

Primed to go off two pleasing trials and he draws to get the right run under Chad Schofield.

Race 9: (3:50pm AEST) ARROWFIELD DARK JEWEL CLASSIC F&M GROUP 3 1400M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 15 Zeitung

J: Andrew Adkins (53kg) T: James Cummings

Zeitung has been racing well, and I like that she comes here with the addition of winkers.

The Godolphin filly didn’t have the best of luck when resuming in the PJ Bell Stakes and just looked a touch flat second up in the James Carr.

She was solid through the line last time when fishing third in the Hawkesbury Guineas and I think she’ll be well suited here on the big track.

The winkers go on to help sharpen her up and if she finds clear running early in the straight, she’ll be hitting the line strongly.

Race 10: (4:30pm AEST) SCONE EQUINE LUSKIN STAR STAKES LISTED 1300M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 7 Chrysaor

J: Rory Hutchings (55.5kg) T: Chris Waller

Chrysaor is a hard one to catch but I’m happy to be on him here as he resumes at a big price.

The Chris Waller trained gelding kicked off last campaign in style as he produced a barnstorming finish to take out the Tontonan Stakes at Flemington.

He didn’t do a lot in three in of his four runs following that but was very good when coming off a let up on Magic Millions Day, where he finished third behind West of Africa and subsequent Group One Robert Sangster Stakes winner Charm Stone.

He’ll be well suited on this big, spacious track and the 1300m first up looks ideal.
