Black type racing returns to Brisbane this Saturday with both the Daybreak Lover and Ascot Handicap to feature on the ten card program.
Run at Listed level, the sprints will see several of Queensland’s Winter Carnival hopefuls line up as well as a few interstate contenders.
Thankfully, the rain has stopped and it’s likely we’ll be racing on soft 5 surface.
As usual, we’ve delved deep into the form and have provided our detailed selections below.
Race 1: (10:59am AEST) BECOME A BRC MEMBER QTIS 2YO HANDICAP 1400M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 1 Navy Pilot
Navy Pilot makes the trip from Warwick Farm and he’s sure to find this easier than what he’s previously contested.
The son of I Am Invincible has had the two race starts and there’s been plenty of merit in both performances.
On debut over 1000m on the Kensington, he settled back at the tail off the outside gate and powered home to finish a close fifth.
Thrown in the deep end to contest the Group One Sires Produce Stakes at his following outing, he looked to be travelling well in a midfield position and tried hard in the straight and didn’t have a lot of room over the final part.
He strips fitter and looks beautifully placed at his second attempt at 1400m.
Race 2: (11:33am AEST) SIDELINE BEER GARDEN 3 MAY BM90 HANDICAP 2212M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 3 Tapildoodledo
Tapildoodledo has been racing consistently and presents hard fit.
Well beaten at his first two runs back over the shorter trips, he ran a much improved race when stepping out to 2200m at Doomben and was solid to the line over 2400m at the Gold Coast under the 60kg impost.
He just looked a bit flat over the final part last start when on the seven day back up but with a month between runs, he lines up here on the fresh side.
Justin Huxtable has won on the gelding previously, he goes back aboard and gate two will see him enjoy a cosy run throughout.
Race 3: (12:08pm AEST) THE GIBSON BM78 HANDICAP 1000M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 8 Mighty
Not a lot has gone right for Mighty in her two runs since returning to the Tony Gollan yard but I’m confident she can bounce back here.
The well named mare had spent the previous twelve months down in Victoria under the care of Peter Moody and Kath Coleman where she performed well against solid company.
A winner on 1000m on the Sandown Lakeside before returning home, she just found herself too far back over the 1100m at the Gold Coast but powered home down the outside to finish fifth.
Last start, over this track and distance she shot along the inside, which was clearly inferior and was found to have pulled up with a slow recovery.
A drying track is a big plus and the 1000m is her pet trip.
Race 4: (12:48pm AEST) LADBROKES CALCUTTA 13 JUNE BM70 HANDICAP 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 5 Sicilian
Sicilian was game in defeat when resuming for the new stable and she will have taken plenty of benefit from the run.
Eased out of an early speed battle over the 1000m she, sat wide without cover and just had one get the better of her late.
Formally prepared by the Waterhouse / Bott team, the daughter of I Am Invincible boasts solid formlines and she has been stakes placed on two occasions.
She has won second up previously and the rise to 1200m looks ideal.
The wide draw is a concern but if Emily Lang can get across without burning too much petrol early, she’s sure to be strong late.
Race 5: (1:23pm AEST) SKY RACING QTIS 3YO HANDICAP 1600M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 1 Depth of Character
Depth of Character has been racing well and drops back sharply in grade.
Prepared by Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald, the Deep Field gelding didn’t have the best of luck when finishing runner up at Warwick Farm three runs back, he then contested the Randwick Guineas where he blew the start and was strong to the line to finish a very credible fifth.
With a month between runs, he stepped out in the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes and he was again strong through the line to finish third behind a class pair.
He’s sure to find this easier and whilst does have to carry the big weight, he’s set to enjoy a soft run from the inside draw.
Ryan Maloney will do the steering and I think he’ll prove too good for them.
Race 6: (1:58pm AEST) STRADBROKE SEASON BOOK NOW CLASS 3 PLATE 1400M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 12 French Endeavour
French Endeavour will make her first appearance under new trainer Billy Healey.
Formally prepared by Matt Smith, the mare has competed at a high level for much of her career and she looks beautifully placed here.
She contested the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes two runs back and it was a credible effort as she raced wide throughout and stuck on gamely to finish less than three lengths off Amelia’s Jewel.
Last start, she stepped out in a BM85 here and after stepping away slowly, she didn’t have the clearest of runs in the straight but picked up nicely over the final part.
She’s fit, she gets in well at the weights and with luck in running, I think she’ll be hard to beat.
Race 7: (2:33pm AEST) XXXX BM80 HANDICAP 1600M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 15 Smart Legend
Smart Legend proved too good over this course and distance at his first appearance for the new stable and I think he can make it back to back wins.
There was plenty of merit in the victory as the gelding did race very keen throughout the early part but still found enough late to hold off the challengers.
Formally trained at Randwick, the son of So You Think has turned out some nice performances against solid company and whilst he does rise in grade, he certainly looks up to this.
With a month since that last run, the mile again looks suitable and the blinkers come off, which should see him relax throughout.
Race 8: (3:21pm AEST) LADBROKES ASCOT HANDICAP LISTED 1000M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 7 Libertad
Libertad returns off a lengthy break and he looks ready to go off two solid trials.
The Russian Revolution entire hasn’t raced since contesting 20204 Darby Munro, where he finished third to star mare Jolistar.
Winner at his first three starts, which include the San Domenico and Kindergarten Stakes, he’s proven himself a class horse and whilst his form does read hot and cold, he has had genuine excuses.
He races very well fresh and the 1000m kick off looks ideal.
Race 9: (3:52pm AEST) MORETON HIRE DAYBREAK LOVER 3YO SW LISTED 1400M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 2 Pisces
Pisces was never in the hunt when resuming in the Darby Munro but the Godolphin gelding will have taken plenty of benefit from the run.
Taken right back off the wide gate, he was a long way off the leaders and just finished off fairly.
Boasting a terrific second up record, he’s sure to improve here and he’ll certainly find this easier.
Winner of the Group Three Blue Sapphire last preparation, he’s proven himself a class galloper and he has continued to perform well against quality opposition.
The rise to 1400m will suit and from the wide gate, he’ll get back and be doing his best work late.
Race 10: (4:28pm AEST) EVA AIR BM85 HANDICAP 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 12 Blakmax
Blakmax just did enough when resuming over 1200m here and he’ll better for the run.
Not a noted first up performer, the Brazen Beau gelding does boast a terrific second up record and he’ll certainly appreciate the rise to 1400m.
A very consistent galloper, he’s never far from the action and he looks nicely placed here.
Ryan Maloney takes over and barrier four should see him afforded all the favours.
