Doomben Tips & Preview – Tuesday, April 1

After a wet and soggy weekend in South East Queensland, we look ahead to a 10-race program at Doomben this Tuesday following Saturday’s abandoned meeting.

The track is still in the heavy range at time of writing, but we’ve done our best to provide a tip for every race in our preview below.

Race 1: (11:42am AEST) SOUTH SPORTS CLUB CLASS 1 PLATE 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 9 King Potter

J: Jag Guthmann-Chester (59kg) T: Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald

King Potter resumes in the first race of the day.

The Rothesay gelding has had three race starts and looks to have plenty of upside.

He failed to fire on debut and given a break, returned in fine style to score a dominant 5.5 length maiden win over the 1110m here.

Up in grade to an open three year old handicap at his following outing, he travelled well outside the leader, hitting the front at the top of the straight and was only collared over the final 50m.

The form out of that race has been franked and he lines up here off a comfortable 1050m trial win.

He does have the wide draw to overcome but with even luck, I think he’ll be hard to beat.

Race 2: (12:17pm AEDT) XXXX SIDELINE BEER GARDEN 3 MAY QTIS 3YO HANDICAP 2000M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Liberty Park

J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (58.5kg) T: Chris Waller

Liberty Park has only had the one start on Australian soil and he’s sure to have taken improvement from it.

Now under the care of Chris Waller, the Kiwi import just had the three runs in his homeland before making his way across the ditch and she showed nice ability with a strong win over the mile.

He was only plain when kicking off over 1500m at Hawkesbury but looks suited out to this trip and we know he can handle the heavy conditions.

Race 3: (12:52pm AEST) MICHAEL CAHILL F&M BM70 HANDICAP 1350M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 2 Adiella

J: Tahlia Fenlon (61.5kg) T: John Dann

Adiella has been racing well and she looks to tick all the boxes here.

The Toowoomba trained mare didn’t have the best of luck at Eagle Farm two starts back where she was hampered soon after jumping but she flashed home late along the inside to get within a length of the winner.

She was able to settle closer in the run last time but was held up entering the home straight and charged home to go down by a head.

The rise to 1350m looks ideal, she’ll relish the conditions and Cody Vitler’s 3kg claim sees her in very well at the weights.

Race 4: (1:27pm AEST) LADBROKES CALCUTTA & LUNCHEON 12 JUNE C,G&E BM70 HANDICAP 1350M

Win

No. 1 Rimbaud

Rimaud won well when resuming over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast and he was solid again last time off a seven week let up as he was sent forward after being caught wide early and just found one better late.

With the added fitness the rise to 1350m will suit and he has performed well in soft conditions, so I don’t think he’ll have any trouble in the going.

Dan McGillivray stays aboard for Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald and his 3kg claim sees in him well at the weights.

Race 5: (2:02pm AEST) LARRY CASSIDY BM70 HANDICAP 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 9 Until Valhalla

J: Emily Lang (59kg) T: Ciaron Maher

Until Valhalla had been racing well but failed to fire last start at Eagle Farm.

The Ciaron Maher trained mare was taken back to last, she was always wide and just didn’t finish off.

She’s hard fit, she drops back in grade and looks well suited here on a wet track.

Emily Lang will take 1.5kgs off, the low draw can see her settle up on speed and I think she’ll be too strong for them late.

Race 6: (2:37pm AEST) BRC MEMBERSHIP NMW HANDICAP 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 5 Thankyou Henry

J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (57.5kg) T: Tony Georgieff

Thankyou Henry has been racing well and looked a touch unlucky when stepping out over this course and distance last start.

Held up in early part of the straight, he charged late into second, taking good ground of the eventual winner Certainly Can.

A very handy galloper, he’s made it three wins and four seven from just his eight starts and his only unplaced run was fresh up when he had very little in his favour.

He’s at peak fitness, he was a dominant winner at his only start on a heavy track and he looks well placed to get the job done here.

Race 7: (3:12pm AEST) XXXX BM78 HANDICAP 2000M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 11 Scarlet Prince

J: Boris Thornton (58kg) T: John Smerdon

Scarlet Prince is racing in red hot form and presents hard fit.

A recent addition the John Smerdon yard, the Casino Prince gelding has recorded two wins and three placings from five starts this campaign.

He made it back to back wins when saluting over 2170m at Ipswich and was solid when stretching out to 2400m last time in BM85 company.

He drops back in grade, he’s got a terrific record on heavy tracks and draws to get the right run under Boris Thornton.

Race 8: (3:47pm AEST) MORETON HIRE BM85 HANDICAP 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 4 Miracle Spin

J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (58kg) T: Matthew Smith

Miracle Spin makes the trip from Sydney and he’s sure to find this easier than what he’s been contesting.

Sent to the paddock after finishing second at Flemington to subsequent stakes winner Rise At Dawn, the Matthew Smith trained gelding kicked off his campaign in the Group 3 Newcastle Stakes where he was slow away and just held his ground to the line.

He strips fitter here and will appreciate getting out to the mile.

He’s got a great record on heavy tracks and I don’t think the wide gate will be an issue given the conditions.

Race 9: (4:22pm AEST) SKY RACING QTIS 3YO HANDICAP 1350M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 2 Apuntar

J: Cody Collis (58kg) T: Kevin Kemp

Apuntar just looked in need of the run when resuming in the QTIS 3YO Jewel and he will have taken plenty of benefit from it.

The Keven Kemp trained gelding has shown good ability, preforming well in some strong races, with his best efforts having been on wet tracks.

He’s two from two over 1400m so he’ll certainly relish the rise to 1350m and he gets in nicely with the 2kg claim for Cody Collis.

Race 10: (5:10pm AEST) LADBROKES MATES MODE POTS OPEN HANDICAP 1350M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 9 Hatchet

J: Robbie Dolan (53kg) T: Robert Heathcote

Things didn’t go right for Hatchett here two starts back but he bounced back with a solid effort to finish third in the Gold Jewel last time.

Settling well back off the wide gate, he came the widest on upon turning into the straight and powered home down the outside to get within a length of the winner.

Whist his record over this trip doesn’t look flash, he has won and the way he found the line last start over 1400m suggests this is just what he’s looking for.

He’s fit, he loves it here at Doomben and I don’t think he’ll have any trouble in the conditions.

With 53kgs on his back, he’ll be storming home late under Robbie Dolan.
