2025 Randwick Guineas Day Tips & Preview

Our 2025 Randwick Guineas Day preview focuses on the Group 1 Randwick Guineas that headlines an exciting day of racing at Royal Randwick this Saturday.

Run over the famous Randwick mile, this year’s edition will see just nine runners vie for honours in the three-year-old feature.

Following that, a high-class field will assemble in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes and with seven other stakes races to be run and won, we’re in for a brilliant day of racing.

The rail will be out 3m for the entire circuit and with showers forecast of the remainder of the week, the track is expected to be in the soft range come raceday.

We’ve had a close look at all ten races on the Randwick Guineas Day card and our thoughts and latest Randwick race selections can be found below.

Race 1: (12:20pm AEDT) MIDWAY HANDICAP BM72 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 7 Pocketing

J: Tim Clark (55kg) T: Richard & Will Freedman

First-up on Randwick Guineas Day 2025 we’ve got Pocketing who appeared disappointing over the 1350m at Rosehill two runs back but was found to have pulled up with cardiac arrythmia.

The son of Grunt bounced back with a very pleasing effort over 1400m last start, charging home into third and I think he’ll relish getting out to the mile here.

He’s put together a very tidy record and looks a smart horse on the rise.

The blinkers go on for the first time and the low draw can see him settle in striking distance under Tim Clark.

Race 2: (12:55pm AEDT) JERICHO GROUP FIREBALL STAKES 3YO LISTED 1100M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 3 Zeitung

J: Zac Lloyd (56.5kg) T: James Cummings

Zeitung resumes.

The Godolphin filly was terrific during the Spring, hitting the line strongly in the Furious and Champagne Stakes before claiming second place in the Thousand Guineas Prelude and then taking out the Vanity.

She was a touch disappointing in the Thousand Guineas, but I feel that she may have just come to the end of her preparation by that point.

She won well when resuming over 1100m last campaign, beating a handy field and she looks to have come back in top order with two very pleasing trial performances.

Zac Lloyd will do the steering for James Cummings and she’s sure to be strong late.

Race 3: (1:30pm AEDT) PETALUMA REISLING STAKES 2YO FILLIES SW GROUP 2 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Tempted

J: James McDonald (55.5kg) T: James Cummings

Tempted won well on debut and has been luckless in two subsequent starts.

The Street Boss filly was taken back to last when stepping out in the Widden Stakes but and finished off strongly to get within a nose of the winner.

She then contested the Blue Diamond but had nowhere go at the top of the straight and after switching across heels 150m out, she charged late but it was all over.

She looks well suited here on the big Randwick track and gets the services of James McDonald in the Reisling Stakes 2025.

Race 4: (2:05pm AEDT) DARLEY TODMAN STAKES 2YO C&G SW GROUP 2 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 5 Wodeton

J: James McDonald (55.5kg) T: Chris Waller

There was plenty of talk about the ride of Wodeton last start, but Kerrin McEvoy was instructed to go back and from there, it all went pear shaped for the Golden Slipper favourite.

Three wide without cover throughout, he tried hard, but the task was too great.

The son of Wooton Bassett could not have been more impressive when winning on debut and I’m happy to forgive his last start defeat.

It was five weeks between those two runs with just a 79m trial in between, so with the added fitness, the slight rise to 1200m in the Todman Stakes 2025 looks ideal and James McDonald can have him settle where he’s comfortable.

Race 5: (2:40pm AEDT) MOSTYNCOPPER ASPIRATION QUALITY F&M GROUP 3 SW 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Mare of Mt Buller

J: Jason Collett (54kg) T: Chris Waller

Mare of Mt Buller kicked off her campaign with a very encouraging effort over this course and distance and she will have taken plenty of improvement from it.

The Chris Waller trained mare relaxed beautifully toward the rear of the field and did lose momentum when held up in the early part of the straight but let down strongly once clear to claim third.

With a month since that outing, she’s been given an easy time of things in a recent trial and looks ideally placed staying at the mile second up.

She does rise grade but gets in nicely on 54kgs and I certainly feel that she’s up to this class.

Race 6: (3:15pm AEDT) SCHWEPPES CHALLENGE STAKES WFA GROUP 2 1000M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 8 I Am Me

J: James McDonald (56.5kg) T: Ciaron Maher

I Am Me had no luck when resuming in the Oakleigh Plate but her second up stats read equally as impressive as her first up record.

The gap closed 150m out in the Group 1 feature, leaving her with nowhere to go and but thankfully she appears to have come it through it well.

Winner of eleven races, the I Am Invincible mare is highly talented, but she really thrives over these shorter trips.

She was brilliant when staving off Bella Nipotina over this track and trip in the Corncorde last prep and again when taking out The Shorts over 1100m at her following outing.

She’s a four-time winner here at Randwick and draws to get the gun run under James McDonald in the Challenge Stakes 2025.

Race 7: (3:50pm AEDT) THE AGENCY RANDWICK GUINEAS 3YO SW GROUP 1 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 1 Broadsiding

J: James McDonald (56.5kg) T: James Cummings

Broadsiding returned to the races in top order a fortnight ago, taking out the Hobartville Stakes in fine style.

A three-time Group One winner, the son of Too Darn Hot has continued to rise to the occasion each time the bar has been raised and his effort to finish third in the Cox Plate really stamped him as one of the most exciting gallopers in the country.

He’s unbeaten in two starts over the Randwick mile, he gets in beautifully under the set weight conditions and James McDonald stays aboard.

Race 8: (4:30pm AEDT) TOYOTA FORKLIFTS CANTERBURY STAKES WFA GROUP 1 1300M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 12 Switzerland

J: James McDonald (56kg) T: Chris Waller

Switzerland was solid through the line when resuming in the Black Caviar Lightning and I think he’ll relish the rise in trip.

The son of Snitzel has proven himself a top-class galloper, winning five of his eight starts and he will have taken good improvement from that outing.

He was pulling away from them over the final 100m when victorious in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, so the 1300m looks well within his reach.

He’s two from two second up and remains unbeaten at Randwick after three appearances.

James McDonald stays in the saddle for Chris Waller and the Coolmore team, and I think the colt can add a second Group 1 win to his resume here in the Canterbury Stakes.

Race 9: (5:05pm AEDT) TOYOTA CITY KEIBA RANDWICK CITY STAKES LISTED 2000M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 14 Kinesiology

J: Zac Lloyd (53.5kg) T: Chris Waller

Kinesiology comes off a top second up performance to place in the Parramatta Cup and he looks ready to peak at his third run back.

He kicked off his campaign with an encouraging effort over the mile here and he was even better last time with the rise to 1900m.

At just his third start on Australian soil, the former European galloper has shown good improvement on each occasion and looks a very handy stayer on the rise.

He gets in here with just 53kgs and if he can slot in and find cover early off the wide gate, he’ll be hitting the line strongly.

Race 10: (5:40pm AEDT) HKJC WORLD POOL WENONA GIRL QUALITY MARES GROUP 3 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 4 Commemorative

J: Jason Collett (54kg) T: James Cummings

I was with Commemorative last start and it wasn’t an easy watch.

Slowly away, she settled back near the tail and then found trouble in the straight but charged through late to grab third.

An imposing mare, the daughter of I Am Invincible has always shown plenty of talent but has taken time to fully mature.

She recorded her first stakes win back in May last year, when saluting in the Listed Denise’s Joy at Scone and was beaten only a head when resuming in the Group 3 Toy Show last campaign.

She’s returned in top order and with luck in running, I think she’ll be too strong for them late.
