2025 Golden Slipper Day Tips & Preview

Our attention turns to Rosehill Gardens this Saturday with the running of the Group One Golden Slipper set to headline a mammoth day of racing. The $5m purse makes it the world’s richest race for the two-year-olds and this year’s edition is one of the most open in recent years.

Nine black type races will follow the opener, four of which will be run at Group One level. There’ll be no shortage of quality across the card with the Ranvet Stakes, Rosehill Guineas, George Ryder and The Galaxy all to be run and won.

Rebecca Hill has delved into the form, and she provides her detailed selections below.

Race 1: (12:30pm AEDT) MIDWAY HANDICAP BM72 HANDICAP 1500M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 4 Rush Attack

J: Anna Roper (58.5kg) T: Nathan Doyle

Rush Attack won well over this course and distance two runs back and looks well placed to repeat that performance.

The Brave Smash gelding has been in fine form since joining the Nathan Doyle, having yet to miss a top two spot in seven race starts.

He was only beaten by the narrowest of margins last time at Randwick when he bumped into the smart, Pocketing and with luck off the wide gate here, he looks hard to beat.

Anna Roper will take the mount and her 3kg claim sees him nicely with 55.5kgs.

Race 2: (1:05pm AEDT) BISLEY WORKWEAR EPONA STAKES 3YO F&M GROUP 3 1900M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 7 Mare of Mt Buller

J: Zac Lloyd (54kg) T: Chris Waller

Mare Of Mt Buller has hit the line strongly in both runs back this time in and she looks ideally placed stepping out to 1900m in the Epona Stakes.

She was a touch unlucky when resuming over the mile at Randwick and last start over that same track and distance in the Aspiration, she stormed home into second after settling at the tail of the field.

The Dundeel mare was the runner up in the Doomben Roses during the Brisbane Winter and she did finish off strongly over 2000m here last preparation, so she’s proven herself over the trip and she gets in nicely on 54kgs.

Zac Lloyd will do the steering for Chris Waller and barrier seven can see her settle within striking distance.

Race 3: (1:40pm AEDT) ASAHI SUPER DRY N E MANION CUP QUALITY GROUP 3 2400M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Alalcance

J: Tim Clark (55kg) T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Alalcance comes off a gutsy win in the Randwick City Stakes and she will have taken plenty of benefit from the run.

Resuming over the 2000m journey the mare took up the running and showed plenty of heart to hold out the challenges and score by half a length.

Only lightly raced having had the eight starts, the Irish import has now made it three wins and four second placings and she looks a serious stayer on the rise.

The step up to 2400m will suit and with Tim Clark aboard she’ll be afforded every chance up on speed.

Race 4: (2:15PM AEDT) HYLAND RACE COLOURS DARBY MUNRO STAKES 3YO LISTED 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Autumn Glow

J: James McDonald (57kg) T: Chris Waller

Autumn Glow returns to the races.

The talented filly took all before in her first campaign, scoring a dominant win on debut in a 3YO Benchmark 72 Handicap before taking the step to stakes grade, with decisive wins in both the Group Three Up and Coming Stakes and Group Two Tea Rose Stakes.

She lines up here off three pleasing trials, where she’s worked through the line under very little pressure and she draws to get all the favours under James McDonald.

Race 5: (2:50pm AEDT) RANVET STAKES WFA GROUP 1 2000M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 6 Via Sistina

J: James McDonald (57kg) T: Chris Waller

Via Sistina was back to her best last start as she recorded a determined victory in the Verry Elleegant Stakes, and she looks beautifully placed here up to 2000m at her third run back.

Last year’s Cox Plate champ was victorious in this race last year in what was just her second start on Australian soil and she’s since added a further five Group One wins to her resume.

A seven-time winner over the 2000m, there’s no doubting this is her pet trip, and she’ll get conditions to suit in the 2025 Ranvet Stakes.

Race 6: SKY RACING ROSEHILL GUINEAS 3YO SW GROUP 1 2000M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 1 Broadsiding

J: James McDonald (56.5kg) T: James Cummings

Broadsiding kicked off his campaign in fine style with a comfortable win in the Hobartville but he just failed to reel in Linebacker when contesting the Randwick Guineas last start.

A three-time Group One winner, the son of Too Darn Hot has more than proven himself a top-class galloper and I’m happy to stick with him in the 2025 Rosehill Guineas.

His only try past a mile was in the Cox Plate, where he powered home from the back to claim third and I think he’ll relish getting out to this trip again.

Race 7: (4:00pm AEDT) THE AGENCY GEORGE RYDER STAKES WFA GROUP 1 1500M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 1 Ceolwulf

J: Chad Schofield (59kg) T: Joseph Pride

Ceolwulf kicked off his preparation with an encouraging effort in the Apollo Stakes before a slight setback saw him contesting the Canterbury Stakes last time.

It was a solid effort from the gelding dropping back to an unsuitable 1300m but with the two runs under his belt, he looks primed for this assignment.

Runner up in both the Rosehill Guineas and ATC Derby as a three-year-old, the Joe Pride trained galloper took it to a new level in the Spring, recording back-t- back Group One wins in both the Epsom and then the King Charles.

He’ll certainly appreciate the rise to the mile and draws to get the gun run under regular rider Chad Schofield.

Race 8: (4:35pm AEDT) TAB GOLDEN SLIPPER 2YO SW GROUP 1 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 13 Tempted

J: Blake Shinn (54.5kg) T: James Cummings

Tempted comes off a deserved last start victory in the Reisling Stakes and she’s my on top selection for the 2025 Golden Slipper.

The Steet Boss filly won well on debut but was luckless in two subsequent starts.

Taken back to last when stepping out in the Widden Stakes she finished off strongly to get within a nose of the winner.

She then contested the Blue Diamond but had nowhere go at the top of the straight and after switching across heels 150m out, she charged late, but it was all over.

She settled back last time in the Reisling and although she was wide, she always had cover and given clear air, she sprinted strongly late to score by over a neck.

The inside draw can see her settle within striking distance and Blake Shinn will take the reins for Godolphin as he looks to secure his third success in the feature two-year-old event.

Race 9: (5:15pm AEDT) KIA ORA GALAXY HANDICAP GROUP 1

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Growing Empire

J: James McDonald (56kg) T: Ciaron Maher

Growing Empire has failed to fill the placings in two starts this campaign, but I think he’ll appreciate getting back in a race around a bend in Saturday’s 2025 The Galaxy field.

When resuming the Zoustar colt looked a live chance of taking out the Lightning when he hit the 200m mark but seemed to get lost when he was out in front on his own.

The blinkers came off for his following outing which was the Newmarket Handicap, and he produced a top effort to finish fourth but just looked to peak when he hit the front 200m out.

A high-class colt, he showed his class in Spring when going down by the barest of margins in the Manikato before a terrific effort to finish third in The Everest.

An interesting rider change with James McDonald replacing Mark Zahra and he gets a tongue on for the first time.

Race 10: (5:55pm AEDT) TAB BIRTHDAY CARD STAKES F&M QUALITY GROUP 3 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 1 Commemorative

J: Blake Shinn (59kg) T: James Cummings

Commemorative comes off a deserved last start victory and she looks well placed to repeat that performance.

Luckless when resuming in the Triscay, she proved far too good last time when given clear air in the Wenona Girl.

An imposing mare, the daughter of I Am Invincible has always shown plenty of talent but has taken time to mature.

She’s come back in top order this time in, and I think she’ll continue to step up as they the bar is raised.

Blake Shinn jumps aboard for the first time and if he can navigate a clear path from the inside draw, she’s sure to be strong late.
