2025 QTIS Jewel Prelude Day Tips & Preview

Group 1 racing may be headlined by the Blue Diamond Stakes Day card at Caulfield on Saturday, but in Queensland the two and three-year-olds take centre stage at Doomben with three Prelude races set to be run and won ahead of next month’s QTIS Jewel Raceday on March 18.

The weather is fine, the track is rated a Soft 5, and the rail is out 4m around the circuit.

See below for our complete QTIS Jewel Prelude Day Tips & Best Bets!

Race 1 - 12:12PM RACECOURSE VILLAGE BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1110 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 5 Thankyou Henry

J: Boris Thornton (60kg) T: Tony Georgieff

Open race here to kick off our expert QTIS Jewel Prelude Day tips with a stack of chances coming out of the Tony Gollan yard.

Thankyou Henry is one of the more intriguing ones going around at a price, a consistent sprinter who has found the money in all six races he’s contested so far.

By Kobayashi, he’s typically needed the run first-up in both of his preps in the past, but he’s still well-suited by the distance coming off a nice runner-up effort in his latest trial here at Doomben.

Race 2 - 12:47PM GIRLS DAY OUT 1 MARCH BENCHMARK 90 Handicap (2200 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 9 Bedford Square

J: Ron Stewart (52kg) T: Jack Bruce

Bedford Square has mixed her form over 2200m but is still one of the more fit chances going around at a price.

The seven-year-old by Tavistock won over the track and trip last November, relishing a slightly wet track where she hit top gear over the final 100m to storm the line.

She made up some nice late ground over the same trip at Eagle Farm last weekend, and is open to natural improvement given she was racing off a four-week break that day.

Race 3 - 1:22PM SKY RACING QTIS JEWEL PRELUDE 2YO Colts & Geldings Handicap (1110 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 Pretty Dubious

J: Vlad Duric (56kg) T: Robert Heathcote

Should be some good early speed on offer here with Pretty Dubious and Penrod likely to set the tone.

The latter will have a stack of admirers after gapping his rivals by five lengths in his leadup a couple of weeks ago, but I think Pretty Dubious is still the one to beat after finishing runner-up on debut to Sunrays.

Rob Heathcote’s gelding was fast into stride and did all the hard work up on the speed, simply lacking the toe to go with the late challenge down the outside in the end.

In saying that, he still finished off very strongly, and with the benefit of some fitness now, he’ll take serious running down.

Race 4 - 1:57PM GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB QTIS JEWEL PRELUDE 2YO Fillies Handicap (1110 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Impervious

J: Angela Jones (56.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

Impervious went around at short odds on debut at Ipswich last month and did not disappoint when winning a length clear.

Tony Gollan’s filly did it tough three-wide into the bend, but she still let rip with a serious turn of foot upon straightening to give nothing else a chance.

A recent trial win over Saturday’s rival Vivika reads well and she’s drawn to find cover this time from barrier 6.

Race 5 - 2:32PM BECOME A BRC MEMBER BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1615 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 15 Shadow Power

J: Mark Du Plessis (57.5kg) T: Stephen Matthews

Shadow Power presents rock hard fit now for Stephen Matthews with four runs under his belt.

The Dundeel gelding has missed the cash only once from seven starts, and is looking to break a run of placings that includes a couple of forgive efforts recently where he’s either been held up or forced to make up ground form out wide.

Mark Du Plessis rode him to a place three back on the Sunshine Coast, and from a nice low gate this time, they should be strong late as one of the backmarkers.

Race 6 - 3:07PM XXXX BENCHMARK 78 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Mintaka Lad

J: Noel Callow (60kg) T: David Vandyke

Mintaka Lad is third-up for David Vandyke and looking very close to another win.

By Deep Field, his two efforts this time in work have been strong, running on late to find the line for second here a couple of weeks ago from wider out.

A win over this track and trip third-up really stands out on his resume and there are no real excuses this time from a nice soft gate.

Race 7 - 3:43PM LADBROKES ODDS SURGE QTIS JEWEL PRELUDE 3YO Handicap (1110 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Surprise Honey

J: Emily Lang (56.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

Surprise Honey was sensational here two weeks ago under apprentice Emily Lang, settling third close to the rail before improving around the 150m mark to race clear and win by a couple of lengths.

She was saved late with a bit left in the tank and although this is a step back in trip, a repeat dose could be on the cards providing she settles close enough.

Race 8 - 4:23PM MORETON HIRE OPEN Handicap (1200 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 9 Hatchet

J: Bailey Wheeler (54.5kg) T: Robert Heathcote

Hatchet is a Group 3 placegetter who looks ready to rock and roll now third-up.

Rob Heathcote gave him a nice four-week break before sending him around in a similar 1200m race at the start of the month, one that never really went to plan given he was held up when looking to shift out from the fence upon straightening.

That said, he still fought on well for fourth and would likely benefit from a more positive ride this time with Blake Wheeler taking over.

Race 9 - 5:10PM STRADBROKE SEASON BOOK NOW Class 6 Plate (1350 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 14 Zoology

J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (55.5kg) T: Ciaron Maher

Zoology looks close to another win for Ciaron Maher.

This Zoustar gelding gave a nice sight last start at Eagle Farm when beaten just over a length behind Golden Decade, and there was also a bit to like about his trial between starts.

Capable of handling some sting out of the track and drawn a much better gate this time around, he should be right in the mix.

Race 10 - 5:47PM LADBROKES COMMUNITIES OPEN Handicap - WEIGHTS RAISED 1.0 (1615 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 2 Dune Forty Five

J: Nikita Beriman (58kg) T: Robert Heathcote

Dune Forty Five is worth a look each way in a very open race over the mile to finish off.

He loves racing here at Doomben, as seen a couple of weeks ago when he appreciated the step back to the mile on his way to basically making every post a winner.

A similar effort would see him hard to run down if Nikita Beriman get across early from out wide.
