Doomben Tips & Preview – Saturday, February 1

Saturday racing returns to Doomben this weekend with ten races set to run and won.

The rail will be in true position, which should see all runners given their chance and the track is currently rated a soft 5.

We’ve had a close look at each event on the card and our thoughts and selections can be found below.

Race 1: (12:13pm AEST) RACECOURSE VILLAGE QTIS 2YO HANDICAP 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 7 Making News

J: Angela Jones (56.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

Making News makes her raceday debut.

A daughter of North Pacific, the Tony Gollan trained filly has just had the one public trial and she looked to do everything right.

In the 1000m Doomben heat she jumped away well and took up and running and cruised through the line under little pressure.

She looked to be doing it easily and I think she’ll be too strong late.

Race 2: (12:48pm AEST) GIRLS DAY OUT MARCH 1 BM80 HANDICAP 2200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 2 Lionel

J: Martin Harley (58kg) T: Peter & Will Hulbert

Lionel was very good when kicking off for the new stable.

Slowly away, he settled back second last and trying to pinch runs along the inside, he found plenty of dead ends but he did finish off well once clear.

He looked well suited last time up to 2200m and whilst he did finish off okay into fourth, he just looked to race a touch flat.

I’m happy to stick with him and with the two runs under his belt, he presents here at peak fitness.

Martin Harley stays aboard and gate five should see him afforded every chance.

Race 3: (1:23pm AEST) BECOME A MEMBER HANDICAP BM68 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 2 Original Glaze

J: Jasper Franklin (59kg) T: Jay Bellamy

Original Glaze has been racing well but was given a freshen up after failing at Eagle Farm in December.

With no trial, she just peaked on her run 50m out last time as she was collared late after hitting the front at the top of the straight.

She strips fitter and the winkers go on for the first time.

A six time winner, she’s a very capable mare and Jasper Franklin’s 3kg claim sees her in nicely at the weights.

Race 4: (1:58pm AEST) THANKS NEVILLE BELL CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Cunnamulla Fella

J: Nikita Beriman (57kg) T: Robert Heathcote

Cunnamulla Fella hasn’t had much to go right in two runs back this prep but there’s a lot to like about him here.

The Better Than Ready gelding got back off the wide gate when resuming but worked home nicely under the 60kgs impost and last time, he again got a long way back and worked home on the worst part of the track.

Third up out to the mile looks ideal and he has won over this track and distance previously.

The inside draw can see him settle in striking distance and I think he’s the one to beat.

Race 5: (2:33pm AEST) M2 ELECTRICAL NO METRO WINS 1110M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Track Tale

J: Cody Collis (58.5kg) T: Ricky Vale

Track Tale makes the trip to Brisbane after a commanding first up win at Rockhampton.

The North Queensland trained galloper has put together a terrific record of nine wins and eights placings from her eighteen starts and she looks beautifully placed here in a no metro win event.

She lines up on the fresh side with five weeks since that first up win and the 1100m looks ideal.

Cody Collis jumps aboard and will take 2kgs off with the claim.

Race 6: 3:08pm AEST) XXXX CLASS 2 PLATE 1350M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Fukubana

J: Andrew Mallyon (60kg) T: Matthew Dunn

There was plenty merit in the first up performance of Fukubana and he will have taken improvement from the run.

Settling back off the wide gate over 1200m at Eagle Farm, he worked home strongly along the inside, which was clearly inferior.

He won well at his second run back last preparation and the rise in trip will suit this son of Dundeel.

An improving type, this looks an ideal race for him and the inside draw can see him settle closer in the run.

Race 7: (3:47pm AEST) STRADBROKE SEASON BOOK NOW QTIS 3YO HANDICAP 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 7 Kingdom Undersiege

J: Andrew Mallyon (55.5kg) T: Matthew Dunn

Kingdom Undersiege resumed for the new stable with an ultra impressive 4.5 length victory at Ballina and he looks set for a big campaign.

Only lightly raced, the son of I Am Invincible kicked off his career with team Snowden and failed to fire in three runs with them but a gelding procedure during the break looks to have had the desired effect.

He does rise in grade but it was an effortless win at Ballina and he draws to receive all he favours under Andrew Mallyon.

Race 8: (4:27pm AEST) SKY RACING BM68 HANDICAP 1350M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Space Tracker

J: Jag Guthmann-Chester (59.5kg) T: Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald

Space Tracker didn’t have a lot go right when resuming at Eagle Farm two weeks ago but he’s sure to have taken improvement from the outing.

Over the 1200m he raced wide throughout and just wanted to lay in over the final part and was found to have pulled up with mild heat stress.

The Irish bred gelding has a great record here at Doomben and the rise to 1350m will certainly suit.

He gets a senior ride back aboard with Jag Guthmann-Chester to do the steering and barrier three should see him afforded the run of the race.

Race 9: (5:10pm AEST) LADBROKES FORM GENIUS OPEN HANDICAP 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 12 Tribeca Star

J: Angela Jones (52kg) T: Matthew Dunn

Tribeca Star returns to the races and the Star Turn gelding looks to have come back in top order following two very pleasing trials.

An ultra consistent galloper, he’s has put together a very tidy record and boasts solid form around him.

With two wins and two second placings from four first up appearances, he’s sure to run a big race and he gets in with just 52kgs on his back.

Angela Jones will take the mount for Matt Dunn.

Race 10: (5:50pm AEST) THE GIBSON CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 5 Mintaka Lad

J: James Orman (59kg) T: David Vandyke

Mintaka Lad kicked off his campaign with a solid effort at Eagle Farm, where he was slow away but finished off strongly to get within a head on the line.

Prepared by David Vandyke, the son of Deep Field has proven himself a very capable galloper and he’s got a great record over this track and trip.

He’s yet to fire second up but has had genuie excises so I’m happy to stick with him.

Jimmy Orman will take the rains and if he can find cover early off the tricky draw, he’ll be strong late.
