2024 Gold Rush Day Tips & Preview

2024 Gold Rush Day Tips & Preview

Black-type racing continues this Saturday in Perth with the running of the $1.5 million Gold Rush over 1400m.

The Group 3 weight-for-age feature has attracted a capacity field comprising of Western Empire and Super Smink, who met only a few weeks ago in the Group 1 Railway Stakes.

Nine races are set to be contested, and you can find our thoughts on each in our preview below.

Race 1 - 12:33PM TABTOUCH - HAVE YOU GOT THE TOUCH PLATE (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 King Hit

J: Shaun O'Donnell (57kg) T: T M Andrews

King Hit can bounce back in this much easier 3YO race.

Trevor Andrews’ gelding put together two solid wins over 1400m at Northam and Belmont before stepping up in grade to tackle the G2 WA Guineas late last month.

He was outclassed but far from disgraced that day out over the mile, only weakening over the final 200m to finish down the order beaten over five lengths.

This looks a more suitable race in a much easier contest back over his preferred trip.

Race 2 - 1:08PM BISLEY WORKWEAR HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 1 Final Siren

J: Brayden Gaerth (60kg) T: Rebecca Bayliss

No real surprise to find Final Siren at short odds on return.

Now with Rebecca Bayliss, this smart son of I’m All The Talk mixed his form against the impressive Ginnivan last time in work, a gelding that wrapped up his winter prep winning the Jolly Beggar at Belmont in August.

He wasn’t asked to do a great deal during a recent trial at Albany and has drawn to receive a tidy ride in behind the speed from the middle gate.

Race 3 - 1:48PM MRS MAC'S HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Keep Attacking

J: Clint Johnston-Porter (54.5kg) T: G & A Williams

Keep Attacking is deep into his prep but continues to hold his form nicely.

The Grant and Alana Williams-trained gelding has featured in the money in four of his last five starts, winning three back at Belmont where he charged from out wide and rattled off some nice late sectionals in the process.

A six-year-old to Snippetson, he worked home nicely again off the speed over the track and distance for third a few weeks ago and maps to receive a similar ride in transit with Clint Johnston-Porter hopping back into the saddle.

Race 4 - 2:28PM MCA POLYTRACK HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 3 The Boss Lady

J: Chris Parnham (58.5kg) T: M L Lane

The Boss Lady could have a few of these covered in terms of class.

Michael Lane’s mare was well-supported a couple of weeks ago in the Listed Jungle Dawn on her way to an impressive win by close to half a length.

She’s only three runs into her prep, and if she gets another genuine tempo again, she should be very hard to beat stepping back to BM78 level.

Race 5 - 3:08PM PKF PERTH HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 5 Stormageddon

J: Joseph Azzopardi (58.5kg) T: Michael Grantham

Stormageddon would probably be racing at shorter odds if he’d drawn a gate.

Regardless, he made up solid ground last start in his first look at 1800m, settling in the back half of the field before angling into the clear out wide to finish 2.6 lengths off.

The lightly-raced son of So You Think is still working a few things out, but if he gets the breaks early on and can find the right pocket in the run home, he could be dangerous with some late speed under the hood.

Race 6 - 3:42PM QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 4 Madame Magic

J: Chris Parnham (59kg) T: Daniel & Ben Pearce

Willing to give Madame Magic another look despite a rather flat effort last time out over this same track and trip.

The wide gate likely played a part when she failed to run on, but that wasn’t the case two back when she charged late for second after being held up badly at the top of the straight.

Rock-hard fit now for three runs back and drawn a much softer gate, she could give this a real shake if she can settle handy.

Race 7 - 4:16PM TABTOUCH - STARSTRUCK CLASSIC (1600 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 7 Bonjoy

J: Clint Johnston-Porter (55kg) T: Jason Miller

Bonjoy comes out of the Jungle Dawn where she ran an enormous race fresh from a lengthy 39-week spell.

Jason Miller’s mare got away fairly and was happy to settle right back off the speed under Clint Johnston-Porter, eventually working her way into third in what was arguably one of the best runs of the meeting.

She’ll take great improvement into this race, especially with two wins already to her name second-up in the past. Drawn well, out to the mile, she ticks most of the boxes.

Race 8 - 4:57PM 7PLUS SPORT - GOLD RUSH (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 14 Super Smink

J: Chris Parnham (57kg) T: D Morton

The setup for Super Smink is questionable dropping right back to 1400m after tackling the Northerly Stakes last week over much further.

Nothing really went right for Daniel Morton’s mare that day as she was taken back and squeezed between a pair before being held up badly down the straight.

In saying that, her run three weeks ago in the Railway was outstanding, weaving a passage from the tail to get up along the rail and finish third.

As a previous G3 winner earlier in her prep, this looks like the ideal consolation prize provided she handles the shorter trip.

Race 9 - 5:32PM SWAN DRAUGHT HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 5 Snippy Which

J: Lucy Fiore (57.5kg) T: Adam Durrant

Snippy Which just needs the right run from the inside gate to go on with the job.

Adam Durant’s gelding was back in the winner’s circle a few weeks ago at Geraldton where he let down with a powerful run for a soft win right on the line.

His form here at Ascot has been mixed, but considering he was four weeks between runs that day, there’s still scope for improvement having drawn a nice low gate.
