2024 Tattersall’s Classic Day Tips & Preview

The Tattersall’s Club will host their annual raceday at Doomben this Saturday with ten races scheduled to be run and won.

South East Queensland has copped a deluge of rain in recent days and the track is currently at a heavy 10 rating.

The weather is expected to fine up over the weekend so hopefully the meeting can go ahead.

The rail will be in the true position and we’ve done the form, the wet trackers being the clear standouts, and our thoughts can be found below.

Race 1: (12:18pm AEST) WIDDEN QTIS 2YO HANDICAP 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 6 La Bella Boom

J: Angela Jones (57.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

La Bella Boom has just the one start and it was a very encouraging debut over the 1050m here.

Eased back off a wide gate, she was very green but hit the line strongly to claim third.

A daughter of Spirit of Boom, she will have taken plenty of natural improvement from the outing and the rise to 1200m looks ideal.

She was strong through the line when winning a Sunshine Coast trial in heavy conditions last month so I don’t think she’ll have any trouble in the conditions.

Race 2: (12:553pm AEST) DES LAMBERT MEMORIAL 1MW HANDICAP 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 9 Torabella

J: Emily Lang (55.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

Torabella comes off a strong win over the 1350m here and looks nicely placed going up to the mile.

The Tony Gollan trained mare had no luck first luck when posted wide over 1200m and was found to have pulled up with heat stress but bounced back in fine form last time.

A winner of three from six, she’s not short of talent and looks very progressive.

She has won over this track and trip previously and whilst she is unknown on a heavy surface, I’m happy to stick with her.

Emily Lang retains the mount and with her 2kg claim, the daughter of Toronado gets in beautifully with just 53.5kgs.

Race 3: (1:28pm AEST) ROAD TO MAGIC MILLIONS BOOK NOW BM70 HANDICAP 1600M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 10 Naval Seal

J: Andrew Mallyon (58.5kg) T: Chris Waller

Naval Seal has been racing well and is sure to relish getting back on a track with plenty of give.

He won well at Hawkesbury back in August and just looked to feel the pinch late over 1830m at Eagle Farm when resuming off an eight week let up.

Last start, he didn’t have the best of luck in the straight and did well to finish second, whilst he wouldn’t have beaten the winner, he certainly should have finished that bit closer.

He drops back in grade and in trip, and the son of Snitzel boasts solid form on heavy tracks.

Andrew Mallyon got a feel for him last time and he’ll again do the steering for Chris Waller.

Race 4: (2:03pm AEST) SKY RACING BM87 HANDICAP 2200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 Naval Commission

J: James Orman (59.5kg) T: Ciaron Maher

Naval Commission makes the trip from Sydney and the Ciaron Maher trained galloper looks ready to peak at his third run back.

When resuming over 1400m at Warwick Farm, he charged late to go down by the barest of margins.

He then stepped out over 1800m in a solidly run race at Rosehill but failed to finish off.

I’m always happy to forgive an ordinary second up run and I certainly think he can bounce back here with conditions to suit.

He’s three from four on heavy tracks and has yet to miss a top three spot in five outings on soft surfaces.

The rise in trip will suit and he gets the services of Jimmy Orman.

Race 5: (2:38pm AEST) EMPIRE OF JAPAN CLASS 2 PLATE 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 12 Sultry Siren

J: Ryan Maloney (58kg) T: Robert Heathcote

Sultry Siren has settled into Queensland life every well, having saluted in two of four starts since joining the Heathcote camp.

Formally prepared at Cranbourne, the impeccably bred mare wasn’t far away in five starts in Victorian prior to heading north and she proved too good over the 1100m here when resuming.

She had no luck second up and then charged home late to dead heat for second.

Relishing the soft conditions last time, she extended beautifully over the final part to win easily.

She’s fit, likes it here at Doomben and gets a senior rider back on, with Ryan Maloney to take the reins.

Race 6: (3:17pm AEST) XXXX FILLIES AND MARES BM78 HANDICAP 1110M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

No. 4 Arisphere

J: Angela Jones (58kg) T: Tony Gollan

Arisphere comes here in red hot form looking to make it four straight wins.

Not a lot went right for the Exosphere mare last campaign but she returned in fine order to get her maiden win on the board and she’s worked through her grades with relative ease having won four from five this time in.

She was particularly impressive last start as when asked for effort she found plenty, giving a strong kick and pulling away and score by over a length.

This is obviously tougher but she’s doing everything right and she’s got a big fitness edge over a lot of her rivals.

Race 7: (3:53pm AEST) TATTERSALL'S RECOGNITION STAKES LISTED 1350M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 7 Navyonthehighway

J: Tahlia Fenlon (53kg) T: Chris & Corey Munce

Navyonthehighway is a very smart mare on the rise and she had no trouble measuring up when thrown in the deep end last start.

After saluting in four of her first five outings, the daughter of Merchant Navy showed her class with a solid effort to finish fourth in the Group 2 Hot Danish against a high class field carrying equal weight.

She remains unbeaten in three starts here and should find this easier.

She won her maiden in good style on a heavy track and gets in beautifully here with just 53kg on her back.

Tahlia Fenlon has formed a great affiliation with the Chris Munce trained mare and given the likely conditions, I don’t think the wide gate will be a concern.

Race 8: (4:23pm AEST) EUREKA STUD TATTERSALL'S CLASSIC F&M LISTED 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 11 Saltaire

J: Robbie Dolan (55.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

Saltaire has just had the one run for the new stable and finished off strongly to claim second in what was a record time.

Formally prepared by John O’Shea, the Star Turn mare has raced at stakes level throughout her career and boasts solid form around her.

She won the Inglis Nursery at her second race start and despite not seeing the winners’ stall since, she’s produced some terrific performances against quality opposition.

She strips fitter second up, the rise in trip will suit and her only start on a heavy track saw her beaten by a head in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes.

54.5kgs on her back sees her in nicely and she gets a senior rider back aboard, with Robbie Dolan to do the steering for Tony Gollan.

Race 9: (5:12pm AEST) SELECT FIRE SYSTEMS CG&E BM78 HANDICAP 1110M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 12 Bossed Up

J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (55.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

Nothing went right for Bossed Up when resuming at Toowoomba on Weetwood Day and he produced a brilliant effort to get as close as he did.

After an awkward getaway he found himself at the tail and then came the widest in the straight, powering home to get within a head of the eventual winner.

Prepared by Tony Gollan, the son of Better Than Ready has now recorded three wins and three placings from his eight starts and he hasn’t always had the best of luck.

He’s a horse with plenty of upside and he was a dominant winner at his second run back last campaign.

The slight rise in trip will suit and if he can jump away on terms, he’ll be right in this.

Race 10: (5:42pm AEST) LADBROKES PUNTER ASSIST BM78 HANDICAP 1350M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 Metalart

J: Michael Rodd (59.5kg) T: Kelly Schweida

Metalart took all before him in his first campaign, making it four from four before a well earned rest in the paddock.

He talented Better Than Ready gelding resumed last month but just found them a bit too sharp over the 1000m.

He was eye catcher second up, after finding himself a long way he powered home down the outside into third and last time, he had to work hard in the early part to cross and it just tolled late.

He’s fit, this looks an ideal race for him and Michael Rodd, who holds a faultless record aboard the four year old, goes back in the saddle.
