2024 Railway Stakes Day Tips & Preview

Saturday’s Railway Stakes marks the first Group 1 of the Ascot Racing Carnival over in Perth.

Worth $1.5 million, this year’s mile classic has attracted a capacity field of gallopers, including last year’s winner Bustler and Ciaron Maher’s inter-state raider, Light Infantry Man.

For thoughts on all nine races, continue reading below!

Race 1 - 12:34PM TABTOUCH - WESTSPEED PLATINUM SERIES HEAT 3 (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 5 Sunbronzed

J: Joseph Azzopardi (58.5kg) T: D R Harrison

Subronzed should take improvement into this assignment after finding the money twice over the track and distance recently.

Lightly-raced for a four-year-old, David Harrison’s gelding has cashed a cheque more often than not, finishing top three in eight of his 11 career starts so far.

By Patronize, he had a wide gate to contend with two weeks ago which eventually told over the final stages when he was seen tiring towards the line.

Drawn kinder this time though with relief at the weights under Joe Azzopardi, his fitness edge could prove key against some of these.

Race 2 - 1:13PM TABTOUCH - HAVE YOU GOT THE TOUCH HANDICAP (2100 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 7 Affluential

J: Mark Zahra (56.5kg) T: Michael Grantham

Affluential has claims third-up for Michael Graham.

The six-year-old New Zealand-bred son of Zed returned west a couple of weeks ago to tackle the same distance under William Pike, an effort that saw the pair pipped right on the line by Hemlock Stone, who he now meets much better off at the weights.

This boy generally takes a few runs to warm into his prep, so with wins over further to his name, he should be given every chance if Mark Zahra can find the right spot around midfield.

Race 3 - 1:49PM MAGIC MILLIONS - CRYSTAL SLIPPER STAKES (1100 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 9 Talkanco

J: Chris Parnham (55kg) T: Daniel & Ben Pearce

Talkanco should take beating in just her second start for trainers Daniel and Ben Pearce.

This encouraging filly by Group 3 winner I’m All the Talk was enormous on debut over the track and distance earlier in the month, taken back early under Chris Farnham before tracking three-wide into the turn.

She let rip with an impressive turn of foot to win by 1.7 lengths in the end, beating home a smart two-year-old out of the Neville Parnham stable in the process.

Drawn an even better gate this time, she’ll be very hard to hold out if she settles closer to the speed.

Race 4 - 2:28PM MCA POLYTRACK HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 7 Keshi Boom

J: William Pike (57kg) T: G & A Williams

Keshi Boom should have another win on the board after being denied only narrowly two weeks ago.

The mare by Spirit Of Boom was exceptional in the run home, hitting her straps over the final furlong before being held up badly around the 100m mark.

William Pike takes back over with four wins from six starts aboard the four-year-old, and it’s fair to say this girl is set to peak in just her third run back from a lengthy spell.

Race 5 - 3:08PM GLENROY CHAFF - A.J. SCAHILL CUP (2100 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 12 Red Sun Sensation

J: Patrick Carbery (54kg) T: Sue Olive

Red Sun Sensation could come into calculations if we are racing on something close to a Soft 5 on Saturday.

This five-year-old son of Awesome Rock hasn’t won in well over a year now, but he did have a much-improved showing last start in the Listed Luckygray where he ran on nicely for third.

Susan Olive’s gelding had plenty against him that day from a horror gate, so this does stack up as a more winnable assignment over further drawn barrier 4.

Hard fit now fourth-up with only 54kg on his back, his class might see him surprise at good odds.

Race 6 - 3:47PM CARBINE CLUB OF W.A. STAKES (1400 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 1 Valour Road

J: Mark Zahra (58.5kg) T: Simon A Miller

Valour Road is worth forgiving on his latest start in the Lee Steere Stakes a fortnight ago from a wide gate.

The old boy trained by Simon Miller was second last to greet the judge, beaten 2.7 lengths by Casino Seventeen after hitting top gear over the final furlong.

Next week’s Winterbottom looked like the plan at one stage, but clearly the stable have easier assignments in mind with a nomination in the Gold Rush next month.

Regardless, the inside gate is a big plus on Saturday, and with the blinkers off again, we should see an improved performance from this multiple Group 2 winner.

Race 7 - 4:21PM WHITE CLAW - W.A. GUINEAS (1600 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 September Born

J: Brad Parnham (57kg) T: Neville Parnham

September Born is a little on the short side, but it’s hard to knock what he’s done at the races so far.

Neville Parnham’s colt looks to be an exceptional talent, as showcased last start in the Listed Fairetha Stakes when he got going out wide to score by half a length in a gutsy effort.

Bit of a query on him now out to the mile after getting up over his final few strides. But drawn well and likely to get back and in the run, he’ll be in it for a long way no doubt.

Race 8 - 4:56PM SWAN DRAUGHT - RAILWAY STAKES (1600 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 4 Democracy Manifest

J: Mark Zahra (55.5kg) T: Chris Waller

Democracy Manifest might not get a better shot at winning a Group 1.

Chris Waller’s six-year-old is making his way back from an injury, and while that is a small concern alongside the wide gate, his recent form suggests he might be over the odds.

The son of Flying Artie notably ran fifth in the Epsom Handicap last year, and hasn’t been beaten far more recently by some smart horses like Joliestar and Ceolwulf.

Again, the wide gate complicates things for Mark Zahra, but capable of handling all going and kept fresh for the run, he might surprise.

Race 9 - 5:37PM DRUMMOND GOLF HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 Wubin Gold

J: Troy Turner (58kg) T: C H Webster

Wubin Gold was electric last start over the same trip, a run she can only improve on.

The mare by Shooting To Win was given a 10/10 ride by Troy Turner, stalking the pace early and finding the centre of the straight out of the turn to unleash some powerful late speed.

She was competing off a three-week break that day, so there is scope for improvement heading into just her third assignment this prep.

Drawn well with Turner sticking in the saddle, she ticks some important boxes as she continues her rise through the grades.
