2024 George Moore Stakes Day Tips & Preview

For the second time this week feature racing heads to Doomben.

The Group 3 George Moore Stakes will headline a bumper ten race program, with the Listed Mode Stakes and Listed Phelan Ready to also be run and won.

Country participants will get their shot at city prizemoney with both the Country Stampede and Country Cups Finals to be contested.

The track is currently rated a soft 7 and with further showers predicted, it’s set to stay in the soft to heavy range and the rail will be out 4.5m.

My thoughts and selections can be found below.

Race 1: (12:18pm AEST) SEVEN BM85 HANDICAP 1350M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 7 Metalart

J: Michael Rodd (56kg) T: Kelly Schweida

Metalart took all before him in his first campaign, making it four from four before a well earned rest in the paddock.

The talented Better Than Ready gelding resumed last month but just found them a bit too sharp over the 1000m.

He was the eye catcher second up, after finding himself a long way he powered home down the outside into third and last time, he had to work hard in the early part to cross and it just tolled late.

He’s fit, he does rise in grade but drops 4kgs and Michael Rodd, who holds a faultless record aboard the four year old, goes back in the saddle.

Race 2: (12:53pm AEST) DRINKWISE OPEN HANDICAP 2030M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 Kerchak

J: Cody Collis (58kg) T: Ben Ahrens

Kerchak comes off back to back wins and looks well placed to make it three straight.

Plagued by injuries early on, we’re finally seeing the best of this six year old son of Tarzino thanks the masterful efforts of his trainer Ben Ahrens.

Winning two of his first three starts, he showed plenty of talent early on and after spending over two years on the sidelines, he’s added another six victories to his record since April.

He was luckless three runs back but with clear air he proved superior at his following outing and backed that up with strong win in the Listed Mooloolaba Cup last start.

He’s fit, he’s in red hot form and I think he’ll relish getting out to his trip.

Race 3: (1:28pm AEST) XXXX COUNTRY STAMPEDE FINAL 1110M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 The Hanger Cat

J: James Orman (58.5kg) T: Brett Cavanough

The Hanger Cat is ultra consistent and comes here with his confidence high after taking out the Roma Country Stampede Qualifier in good style.

A winner of ten from twenty-two, he knows how to get the job done and the slight rise in trip certainly suits.

He holds good soft track form and has drawn to get the gun run under Queensland’s leading rider, Jimmy Orman.

Race 4: (2:03pm AEST) AQUIS STALLIONS PHELEN READY 2YO PLATE SW 1110

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 7 Icarian Dream

J: Dylan Browne McMonagle (55kg) T: Ciaron Maher

Icarian Dream has performed very well in two runs to date and this looks an ideal race for her.

A daughter of Blue Point, she was well supported on debut after some pleasing trials and didn’t disappoint as she let down strongly to get the win on the board over 1000m at Warwick Farm.

She then stepped straight up to stakes company and produced a solid effort get within a length of North England in the Group Three Golden Gift.

She’s race fit, she should find this a touch easier and Dylan Browne McMonagle makes the journey to Brisbane to do the steering for Ciaron Maher.

Race 5: (2:38pm AEST) COUNTRY CUPS CHALLENGE FINAL 1630M

Win

No Bet

The Country Cups Challenge Final is another that brings country form from all over the state.

It’s a very open betting affair and with very limited knowledge of these horses and tracks that they’ve been racing at, I’m happy to sit this one out.

Race 6: (3:17pm AEST) VALE PAT DUFF CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1630M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 5 Felix The Scat

J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (57.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

Felix The Scat returned to the races in top order, with a commanding victory over the mile here.

The son of Mendlessohn showed good ability early on but a gelding procedure last preparation looks to have been the making of him.

He was doing his best work late in both the Queensland Guineas and Rough Habit Plate before going on to finish third in the QLD Derby.

A smart horse on the rise, he strips fitter second up and he does race particularly well here at Doomben.

Race 7: (3:53pm AEST) WIDDEN STUD MODE STAKES 3YO FILLES LISTED 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 I Found You

J: James Orman (56.5kg) T: Peter Snowden

I Found You comes off an even first up effort in the Group 3 Red Roses at Flemington and will have taken good improvement from the run.

Prepared by Peter Snowden, the daughter of I Am Invincible made a perfect start to her career with a dominant victory over the 1150m on the Kensington.

She then made her way south where she was beaten less than half a length down the straight at headquarters.

She looks progressive, she’s drawn to get the right run under Jimmy Orman and will be well suited with plenty of give in the track.

Race 8: (4:32pm AEST) LADBROKES GEORGE MOORE STAKES GROUP 3 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 Front Page

J: Michael Rodd (57.5kg) T: Matthew Dale

Front Page has been the runner up in two runs back from a break and looks well placed to get the job done.

He found Far Too Easy better on the day when resuming last month in The Kosciusko and he then made the trip to Flemington where he looked the winner everywhere except the line, where he was just collared late by the very handy Rey Magnerio.

The winner of over $3m, the lightly raced eight-year-old is a class horse.

He comes here in peak order and will be afforded every chance under Michael Rodd.

Race 9: (5:12pm AEST) MAGIC MILLIONS PIERATA PLATE 3YO C&G SW 1200M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 1 Amazing Eagle

J: Ryan Maloney (56.5kg) T: G Ryan & S Alexiou

Amazing Eagle makes the trip from Sydney and comes off a strong first up win at stakes level.

Prepared at Rosehill by the Ryan and Alexiou team, the colt just had the three runs in his first campaign, where he finished the runner up at his first two before finishing third in the Group 3 Black Opal.

He made his return in the Listed Brian Crowley and showed good early speed to cross and take up and running and fought gamely over the final part to hold off the challengers.

The form around him is solid, he strips fitter and ridden conservatively, I don’t think he’ll have any trouble running out a strong 1200m.

Race 10: (5:48pm AEST) LADBROKES CITY TO SURF QTIS 3YO 1630M

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 16 Bluepinot

J: Samantha Collett (53kg) T: Chris Waller

Bluepinot is one of three maiden gallopers lining up here.

The Chris Waller trained son of Blue Point has performed well in all three runs but hasn’t the best of luck.

He got a long way back off the wide gate at his second outing but was doing his best work late and last time, over 1550m at Canterbury, he was held up at a crucial stage in the straight.

The form around him is solid and he looks well suited here up to the mile.

Sam Collett will do the steering and with just 53kgs on his back, he’ll be very strong late.
