Season Review

Highlights: Highlights were near non-existent in an arduous, disappointing, waste of a year.

Their two best performances in terms of meaning were a win over rivals Canterbury in Round 1 and a final round smash-job of the Wests Tigers in the much-vaunted ‘Spoon Bowl’.

J’maine Hopgood and Mitchell Moses both impressed in Origin call-ups and Blaize Talagi shone in his rookie seasons but all three stories had more disappointment than joy.

Lowlights: Brad Arthur was Parramatta’s longest-serving coach, one who had taken the club to a Grand Final in 2022 and rebuilt the wooden spoon team he inherited in 2014 but was sacked following a diabolical loss to Melbourne in Round 11, the fifth-time in six games the Eels had lost and conceded north of 30.

Compounding the frustration was the inane decision to hand the reins to the tried-and-failed Trent Barrett as well as the shocking timing that led to the club missing out on the race to sign Wayne Bennett.

Signing Jason Ryles, who all signs point to be a failure, was the shit cherry on top.

A long-term injury to Mitch Moses, losing Blaize Talagi to Penrith, a horrid defensive record and the disappointing performances of some senior players led to 2024 being a wasted year.

What Worked: The Eels led the NRL in offloads by a mile with 13.5 per game – the Roosters were second with 11.3 – in what was a clearly orchestrated plan to create second-phase play, something that worked with Mitchell Moses in the team and did not without him.

Discipline was not an issue for the Eels, who ranked in the bottom half of penalties conceded.

What Didn’t: The Eels defence was a debacle, conceding the second most points and ranking fourth worst in missed tackles.

Goalkicking was a complete disaster for the Eels in Mitchell Moses’ absence with the lack of foreplanning resulting in just a 67% success rate, costing the Eels a number of games.

Parramatta had just one 40/20 all season, the worst in the NRL and the Eels could not bust tackles while they had the second worst completion percentage.

The interim coaching decision was one of the worst in history.
