Season Review
Highlights: While it was a highly disappointing year for the Gold Coast, there were some high points including a record win over the Warriors, victories over Queensland rivals the Dolphins, Cowboys and Broncos (twice) and a Top 4 scalp in Cronulla.
Keano Kini emerged as one of the most exciting young talents the club has seen in a long time.
David Fifita stunningly backflipped from a Roosters deal to remain at the club.
Alofiana Khan-Pereira topped the NRL tryscoring tally and proved a devastating finisher.
Lowlights: Hopes at the Titans were high with Des Hasler at the helm for the first time but the season never really stood a chance when the Titans lost their opening six games, the first four by 13-plus.
Losing their best player Tino Fa’asuamaleaui in Round 2 was a diabolical result. The David Fifita saga ended well but created unnecessary drama around the club.
The health of key playmakers was again an issue with AJ Brimson and Jayden Campbell both missing significant time and Hasler having no real idea how to use Brimson.
Keenan Palasia proved a diabolical signing.
What Worked: Set competitions have been proven to have very little correlation to success but has long been a tenet of the Hasler style and again came to the fore with the Titans ranking 2nd in the NRL, completing 82%.
Gold Coast were very good at busting tackles, ranking sixth and they also had the lowest error rate in the NRL.
The Titans were the second most disciplined team in the NRL.
What Didn’t: The Titans were very poor in efforts areas, ranking bottom five in supports, lines engaged and decoys.
Playmaking struggled with the Titans ranking bottom six in try assists.
The Titans played an exceptionally conservative, dated-style of attack that was typically very easily contained by opposition defences.
