The final Group One of the Sydney Spring Carnival will be run and won this Saturday with the Spring Champion Stakes set to headline another massive day of racing at Royal Randwick.
A 2000m event for the three-year-olds, the staying feature is a key lead up for the both the Victoria Derby and the VRC Oaks and carries a hefty purse of $2m.
The $2m The Invitation will also feature on the ten-race program, along with the Callender-Presnell and Five Diamonds Prelude which are both worth $1m.
Race 1 - (11:30am AEDT) GOW-GATES KIRKHAM PLATE 2YO SW 1000M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 2 Comedy
Comedy is one of three debutants lining up from the Godolphin yard and given the two trials, he looks ready to go.
The son of Snitzel showed plenty of natural speed to win a Randwick heat earlier this month and last time, he was allowed to settle in behind runners and worked through strongly over the final part.
Kerrin McEvoy takes the mount and barrier three should see him afforded very chance.
Race 2: (12:05pm AEDT) MIDWAY HANDICAP BM72 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 2 Miss Hades
Miss Hades was doing her best work late when resuming over 1100m at Rosehill and she’ll certainly appreciate the slight rise in trip.
A winner of four from nine, with three further placings, she’s not short of talent and her only poor run was in heavy conditions.
She has won second up previously and with the drop in grade, she should find this a touch easier.
Tom Sherry was onboard last time, he stays in the saddle for Gary Portelli and with luck from the draw she’ll be right there at finish.
Race 3: (12:40pm AEDT) TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP CLASS 3 1600M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 4 Volcanic Love
Volcanic Love has been racing well and looks nicely placed here up to the mile.
The son of Kermadec wasn’t far away in a Rosehill Highway three runs back and then proved superior on his home track of Grafton, posting a 4.8 length win over the 1410m journey.
He headed to Eagle Farm a fortnight ago where he was strong through the line over 1500m and he comes here hard fit.
He will need a touch of luck from the draw but looks to have plenty of upside.
Race 4: (1:15pm AEDT) SCHWEPPES BRIAN CROWLEY STAKES 3YO LISTED 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 2 King Of Roseau
King Of Roseau was very good in the Poseidon Stakes two runs back, chasing hard from the tail to finish third behind The Everest placegetter Growing Empire.
Out to 1400m last start in the Tapp-Craig, he just wanted to over race which resulted in him being posted three wide without cover and it tolled late.
The drop back to 1200m will suit and winkers come off, which should see him relax.
A son of Capitalist, the colt still does a few things wrong but is highly talented and if Tommy Berry can get the best out of him, he should prove hard to beat.
Race 5: (1:50pm AEDT) CATANACH'S JEWELLERS CALLANDER-PRESNELL 3YO SW GROUP 2
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 2 Just Party
Just Party has been racing in terrific form without the best of luck.
The son of Justify was found to have pulled up with cardiac arrythmia when resuming but bounced back to his best in the Ming Dynasty with a very encouraging effort to finish on the heels of the placegetters.
He didn’t have a lot of room in the straight in the Dulcify and last start, flew home along the rail to get within a nose of Anode in the Tapp-Craig.
The step back out the mile looks ideal, and the inside draw should see him settle closer in the run.
Race 6: (2:25pm AEDT) CINCOTTA CHEMIST CRAVEN PLATE WFA GROUP 3 1800M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 3 Lindemann
Lindermann was only plain when resuming in the Alan Brown but the Lonrho gelding will have taken plenty of improvement from the run and will appreciate the rise to 1800m in this year’s Craven Plate.
Taken back to last off the wide gate, he tracked the widest into the straight and was solid through the line.
He boasts a terrific second up record and the 2023 Rosehill Guineas winner has proven himself a quality galloper on his day.
Joao Moreira takes the mount for Chris Waller, and he’s set to receive all the favours off the inside draw.
Race 7: (3:00pm AEDT) MOET & CHANDON SPRING CHAMPION STAKES 3YO SW GROUP 1 2000M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 3 Henlein
Henlein was never in contention last time when taken back to the tail in the Gloaming Stakes but was doing his best work late and the son of Dundeel is sure to relish the rise to 2000m.
He was the eye catcher at his prior start in the Stutt Stakes where he was set alight from the back, circling the field and powering home into second.
Only lightly raced having had the five starts, he’s performed well on each occasion and continues to improve.
The visors go on which should help to sharpen him up and the inside draw can see him settle in striking distance.
Race 8: (3:45pm AEDT) THE INVITATION F&M GROUP 2 1400M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 1 Zougotcha
Zougotcha was brilliant when resuming in the Winx Stakes, hitting the lead 250m out just be run down in the shadows of the post by stablemate Via Sistina who is current topweight for this year’s Melbourne Cup.
The daughter of Zoustar then stepped outing the 7 Stakes but proved disappointing when failing to beat a runner home.
While a post-race vet examination provided to find anything amiss, a tongue has been added, suggesting she may have just got her tongue over the bit or something similar.
She’s since trialled well, and I certainly wouldn’t be sacking her off one poor run.
A three-time group one winner, she’s a high-class mare and has drawn to get the right run under Joao Moreira.
Race 9: (4:40pm AEDT) FIVE DIAMONDS PRELUDE 5YO SW LISTED 1500M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 5 Osipenko
Osipenko has been racing well and was unlucky not have finished closed in the Toorak Handicap at his most recent outing.
Held up approaching the run and for the majority in the straight, he hit the line strongly once finally clear, but it was all too late.
The Chris Waller trained gelding was doing his best work late off a wide run when resuming in the Theo Marks and again hit the line strongly second up in the Shannon Stakes.
Whilst he hasn’t won for some time, he has performed well at Group One level on several occasions and a race like this looks well within his reach.
Joao Moreira will do the steering and if he can find cover early, he’s sure to be strong late.
Race 10: (5:10pm) ROBRICK LODGE FILANTE HANDICAP QUALITY 1600M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 5 Kintyre
Kintyre presents here at peak fitness and drops back sharply in grade after contesting the Epsom Handicap at his most recent outing.
After wanting to overdo it in the early stages he settled in behind the leader and when presented with a run at the top of the straight he tried hard but just felt the pinch over the final 100m.
The son of Hallowed Crown wasn’t beaten far away in his two prior runs and has continued to perform well as stakes level throughout his career.
This looks a winnable race for him and Jason Collett goes back aboard.
