The build-up has been immense but The Everest raceday is finally upon us!
It’s been said by many that this year’s edition looks to be the best one yet, with a high-class field set to contest the richest race on turf and for the time first ever, the race will hold Group One status.
The $5 King Charles, which will also be run at Group One level will see a field of twelve line up for the mile feature and of course, the $2m Kosciuszko will be run for the country participants.
With a further 5 stakes races to contested on the ten-race program, it doesn’t get much better!
The track is currently rated a soft 6 and the rail will be in the true position.
RANDWICK: Race 1 (12:30pm AEDT) THE STAR ST LEGER STAKES GROUP 3 2600M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 6 Etna Rosso
Etna Rosso comes off a terrific effort in the Metropolitan and looks ideally suited up to 2600m.
Settling well back off the wide gate, the Chris Waller trained gelding made his move 600m from home and finished off strongly into fifth.
He’s been racing in top form this campaign, having taken out the Newcastle Cup at his prior start and he’s hard fit.
The inside draw will see him afforded a far more economical run and any moisture in the track will only enhance his chances.
RANDWICK: Race 2 (1:05pm AEDT) BIG DANCE WILD CARD 1600M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 2 Chorlton Lane
Chorlton Lane hasn’t been far away in two runs back this time in and looks ready to peak.
He was terrific first up in the Goulburn Cup, powering home from the back to claim third.
Last time, he stepped out in the Cameron Handicap and he worked home solidly in what was an on-speed dominated race.
He gets out to the mile which I think will suit and he should find this a touch easier.
RANDWICK: Race 3 (1:40pm AEDT) REGINALD ALLEN QUALITY 3YO FILLIES GROUP 3 1400M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 8 Concordia Wind
Concordia Wind has been solid through the line in both runs this preparation and I think she’ll appreciate the rise to 1400m.
The daughter of Justify kicked off over 1200m at Warwick Farm where she was doing her best work late behind subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner Private Life.
Last start, she was able to settle closer off the inside draw and was strong through the line to hold second.
She does have the wide to overcome but with even luck, I think she’ll be right in this.
RANDWICK: Race 4 (2:15PM JAMES SQUIRE ANGST STAKES MARES GROUP 3 1600M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 5 Hinged
Hinged gets in incredibly well here at the weights in the Angst Stakes.
The Group One winning mare was terrific two runs back in the Chelmsford, charging late to go down by the barest of margins to subsequent Underwood Stakes winner, Buckeroo.
She was plain last time in the 7 Stakes and just held her ground to the line but I’m happy to forgive and she does drop back in grade here.
With four weeks since that run, she comes here on the fresh side and gets in beautifully with just 54kgs.
Blake Shinn will do the steering for Chris Waller, and she’ll relish a bit of give in the track.
RANDWICK: Race 5 (2:50pm AEDT) THE KOSCIUSZKO 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 3 Front Page
Front Page comes back to Randwick looking to claim his third Kosciuszko in successive years.
The eight year old son of Magnus proved too good when scoring an all- the-win in 2022 and he produced a repeat performance last year but he did it in dominant fashion.
A class horse on his day, he’s electric first up, he was fresh up last year when saluting and in the Autumn, he nearly stole The Galaxy when resuming.
He comes here off a very pleasing 900m trial and from the low draw he’ll be afforded every chance under James McDonald.
RANDWICK: Race 6 (3:25pm AEDT) SYDNEY STAKES WFA GROUP 3 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 1 Overpass
Overpass kicks off his preparation.
Now a Group One winner, having taken out the Winterbottom late last year, the Bjorn Baker trained gelding often flies under the radar, but he’s raced at the top level throughout his career and has produced some terrific performances.
His first up record is particularly impressive, and he lines up here off two very pleasing 900m trial wins.
Josh Parr has formed a great affinity with the six-year-old and he’ll again do the steering in the Sydney Stakes field.
RANDWICK: Race 7 (4:15pm AEDT) THE TAB EVEREST WFA GROUP 1 1200M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. I Wish I Win
I Wish I Win looks ready to peak following two very encouraging performances around the Valley.
He was the eye catcher first up in the Moir, charging home down the outside to finish a length off Mornington Glory and last time up to the more suitable trip over 1200, he got a long way back off the wide gate, had to circle the field and again finished off strongly.
A three-time Group One winner, his record speaks for itself and he’s looking to go one better after finishing second in this race last year.
He handles all conditions and barrier nine is perfect as we know he produces his best when given plenty of room.
RANDWICK: Race 8 (4:50PM AEDT) SILVER EAGLE 4YO SW GROUP 3 1300M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 11 Kimochi
Kimochi has returned in fine form this campaign producing two very pleasing performances.
Despite a wide run she proved too strong first up it the Toy Show, digging deep over the final part to hold out the challengers.
Last start she headed to Melbourne to contest the Manikato Stakes and again was caught deep facing the breeze, but she was still strong late, charging home to claim fourth.
A very honest mare, she’s always around the mark and she loves it here at Randwick.
She drops back in grade, she’ll relish the slight rise in trip and with luck from the draw, she’ll be right there at the finish in this year’s Silver Eagle.
RANDWICK: Race 9 (5:35PM AEDT) KING CHARLES III STAKES WFA GROUP 1 1600M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 9 Pride Of Jenni
Pride Of Jenni found her way back to the winners stall last start by doing what she does best.
With the two runs under her belt, Declan Bates allowed her to rip along in front in the Feehan Stakes and she found enough over the final part to hold a 1.5 length margin on the line.
She strips fitter again and with similar tactics expected to be adopted, she’s sure to give a great sight.
The wide draw isn’t ideal, but I’d be surprised to see any of them try and take her on and she just seems to be getting better.
RANDWICK: Race 10 (6:10PM AEDT) WORLD POOL HANDICAP 1400M
Race Starts in: Race Finished
No. 6 Willaidow
Willaidow has been racing well and comes off a strong last start victory at Rosehill.
He proved too good when stepping out here second up but then failed to finish off when he couldn’t attain the lead at this following outing.
Given a month between runs he bounced back to his best over 1400m last time and looks well placed to repeat that performance.
The wide draw is a slight concern but James McDonald sticks and if he can cross and find the front without burning too much petrol early, he’ll be hard to catch.
